County Championship Division One 2017

It all starts tomorrow. Apparently, we've just had the mildest March in the history of weather and it looks like the dry theme will continue through the opening round of matches, which features:

  • Essex v Lancashire (Chelmsford)
  • Surrey v Warwickshire (Oval)
  • Yorkshire v Hampshire (Headingley)

I'll be at Fordfm County Cloud Ground tomorrow to witness Essex's return to top flight action in over half a decade. Unfortunately, Alastair Cook won't (crook hip) while his England opening partner Haseeb Hameed is hopeful (as are we all) that his hand will be sufficiently recovered to allow him to play.

I should really trek down to Canterbury on Saturday but the ease and cost of travelling to The Oval is rather persuasive, not to mention the superior standard.

Bring it all on.

It troubles me that I won't be on here much this season.

The Hanging Monkey 6th April 2017 11:33

Looks like I'm busy over the weekend but I should be able to go to Headingley on Monday, if there's prospect of a reasonable amount of play.

Prince of Denmark 6th April 2017 14:42

Sunday forecast is especially promising - warm and sunny, up to 23C in London - so should be at The Oval then for Surrey v Warks. May do tomorrow too as I always like to see the first day of the season if possible.

I know, I clicked on this link by mistake and then had that sinking feeling.....

Totally reliant on finding dodgy streams of broadcast games this year, aside from any that the counties are showing on their websites. Can't see any CC games on the Sky schedule at all - have they not been announced yet or are they just not showing much (or have I totally missed them)?

I can't recall ever seeing such a stunning spell of controlled pace bowling in county cricket as that which Mark Footitt produced at The Oval this afternoon. At one stage, he had 6 for 6 from 7 overs, including Trott, Bell and Hain for ducks. Shortly after lunch, my pal and I were predicting a long slow batting borefest that wouldn't make the fourth innings. With all the talk of a City T20 extravaganza, it's worth remembering that first-class cricket retains a greater ability to astonish and dazzle than any other version of the game.

Ian Bell rather messed up by inserting.

Minor Maggie 8th April 2017 22:31

Lancs definitely in the box seat against Essex. Interesting to see Parry ahead of Kerrigan in the lancs team.

It seems Hampshire has done an employee exchange with the Cape Cobras.

Really was an exceptional spell, well backed up by Sam Curran to polish them off. Footitt's England chances looked to have sailed but performances like that on a fairly unhelpful pitch will go a long way to putting him in the selectors' minds for the Ashes.

On a different note, Fidel Edwards' ball to bowl Bresnan was absolutely delicious. Steaming delivery that jagged right back and uprooted his stumps. https://www.facebook.com/countychamp...7683335643267/

Looks like Surrey could be some force this season. Able to leave out Meaker and Ansari and to do this.

I'm also feeling a little more confident about my suggestion that Warwickshire might go down. Without Woakes, Surrey fans said their attack was very one-paced with only the workmanlike Barker testing them, and they're hugely reliant on a crop of players in their thirties whose stars are fading.

Hampshire have 9 wickets left with 204 to chase. No reason why they can't win this

A team with this many South Africans in it is bound to give it away as the finish line gets close.

Haha, I wish!

Shows how innocuous the bowling is, even Vince is scoring runs.

Minor Maggie 9th April 2017 16:10

Lancs have set Essex 477 to win. Alex Davies made his maiden first class ton.

CDogg16 9th April 2017 16:32

Great game between Hants and Yorkshire. Fantastic to see Carberry back in the Cahmpionship as well.

There was an element of choke in Rossouw's dismissal, a wild swish whilst he and Dawson were cruising. More please!
