Good point, 3hard. The statistics are prone to mislead at times and this is a particularly sneaky one. One interesting thing about Pietersen getting so many innings is that batting down the order at 4 or 5 he's still doing so much batting. Bradman at 3 didn't but then he usually scored such a big hundred in the first innings that the second wasn't necessary. Having said that, with test scoring rates up I suspect most sides are batting twice more than they did, except against England in the last year or so, anyway.
