The Aussie batsman has an Italian passport through his father, and if he becomes a European citizen he could play for Durham under the Kolpak rule. That, in turn, would leave Durham free to sign another overseas star.

Yes I think the article got that wrong. He would come under the Bosman ruling. Chanderpaul could be a Kolpak if he was from one of the WI islands that have an associate agreement with the EU.
