Don't gamble, and try to discourage it in others. That's not going to solve the problem in itself, but it could help. Unfortunately, though, our whole culture is based on gambling. Investment is gambling. Insurance is betting on yourself to be unlucky. School leavers aren't even allowed to continue their education without making a huge gamble with borrowed money. I've thought of going to the woods and living on worms, but in this part of the world it's a gamble with the weather.

Modi having another go at Giles Clarke on Twitter

Quote:
just learnt from a Acsu official - A England women's Team World Cup match was under investigation. It was stopped at behest of Giles Clarke threatening chairman Ecb. Directing @ICC ceo David Richardson of stopping this investigation or he will Pull out ECB TEAM FROM THE TOURNAMENT. MEDIA SHOULD INVESTIGATE THIS. OVER TO U
Incendiary stuff. At least it would be if anyone took Modi seriously.

Something of an incoherent tweet. Is Modi related to our Nhants journalist chum?

Chris Cairns is being very bullish for someone in the position he's in.

He must know that it's basically his word against McCullum and friends, and there' isn't any other evidence directly implicating him.

I think this is the wrong approach. A war on gambling is only going to end in certain defeat. There is nothing wrong with gambling and as long as its legal and thus can be monitored , it should also be possibe to keep sport clean.

Has there ever - in modern times - been a case of fixing with no overseas ties? I think its close to impossible. The numbers dont add up. A player will only take the risk for a considerable amount of money, which means even more money must be bet on something one player can control . A huge weird bet on no-balls in a specific over will pop up on screens and be investigated.

The big problem is that sports betting is illegal in India. Bookmakers are by definition criminals whether they fix or not. They may as well do it. And with no one knowing who bets how much on what is infinitely easier.

Kim Barnett ran up over 100,000 gambling debts at Derbyshire (allegedly) of which the club agreed to pay 92 grand yo rescue him from the bookies. Just think how susceptible he was to match fixing to clear that debt. This is not about greed so much.

Don't people essentially gamble to try and gain a load of money by not doing very much?

The main problem is the relative war-chests. The top players can make more honestly than dishonestly. Those slightly lower down can make a sizable difference to their standard of living by being corrupt. And particularly in the spot market, it's easy to persuade yourself that it's relatively harmless and won't actually change the result.

Doesn't say that. He could only name names if he was guilty, but he maintains he isn't.
