not quite sure why I should be riveted by the IPL - surely its just a Domestic league in another country, in the same way as the Bundesliga or La Liga in football are, and I have only a passing interest in them as I have no particular interest/preference in who wins

That's exactly the point - the IPL is not just "a domestic league in another country". Nor is the BBL. Both are competitions with international appeal - which is why international broadcasting rights to them are sold for vast amounts of money.

In the UK, for example, there were bigger viewing figures in 2017 for some IPL matches than there were for some of the T20 Blast games.

Hopefully the new English T20 Premier League will have a similar international appeal to viewers in Australia and on the sub-continent.

We live in a global economy and sport is now part of that. Brexit might have made it fashionable to pretend that the UK can pull up the drawbridge and go it alone.

It's a fantasy, as the ECB found when they tried to go it alone and we ended up with Stanford.

There's only one thing that is certain about the future - it always happens, however many drawbridges one pulls up and red lines one draws on the pitch!

That's why Strauss arranged for the ECB to pay Billings to play in the IPL when he was actally losing money by doing so...(which I still think was highly questionable and I'm surprised that other posters, who are usually so ready to attack the ECB over their every move, haven't picked up on)

Do you have the IPL/Blast viewing figures for the UK for 2017? I'd be genuinely interested to see them.

It's cricket to watch during a wet April, I just watch it when I've got some spare time, same as the BBL. Bundesliga or La Liga are on at the same times as the English leagues so I'll only watch them when there's an important match as there's always an English game around the corner that's personally relevant.

I wonder if it is possible to see viewing figures for areas with a large Indian population and those without. Genuinely interested to know how many non Indian heritage British people care about the ipl.

talk about global league and dismissing comparison to overseas football is odd. The premier league is the most global league and sold to other countries but does that make it the best? Domestic football has lots of foreign players involved so all the big leagues are global aren't they? As others have said - I rarely watch them because I don't care.

Rain stops play in the IPL.

Not just any old rain though. This is the most exciting rain you'll ever see anywhere in the world. It's journey from sky to ground is a wonder to behold.

If we see anything half as good as this in our new T20 tournament we are all in for a treat.

With our weather I suspect we will...and then some.

Boo. It's stopped raining in the UK but now it's ruddy well raining in Jaipur!

I posted the viewing stats of IPL v T20 Blast on here last season, Arich, because I was surprised that more people watched Mumbai v Delhi than Derbys v Leics. I haven't seen stats for how many UK viewers tuned in to the BBL, gbm, as that was on BT Sport and I only have access to Sky viewing figures.

I'm afraid, Sir Virgs, that I refuse to recognise the distinction between what you call "non Indian heritage British people" (i.e white) and any other UK citizens. Ravi Bopara, Adil Rashid and Monty Panesar are just as "British" to me as Joe Root, Alistair Cook and Jimmy Anderson - and more "British" than the likes of KP, Trott and Allan Lamb.

No. Only by people who are so not interested in the IPL that they can't stop clogging up the thread about it to tell us how little they care!

It's a message board. Message boards involve people who have opinions. Those opinions differ otherwise there would be no point if we all followed the same line. Are you saying that if people don't like the IPL on this thread they should not post on here? Is your surname Hitler?

I can see why you don't get on with Mr Dobell.

In the meantime I'll continue to be an irritating old s**t because I'm up for that award for the third year in a row.

Yawn. It's a message board and equally I have every right to find your constant whingeing tedious. And sorry to disappoint you : I know this will come as a blow to your look-at-me amour propre, but you don't win the irritating old s**t award because you don't have the wit to be irrtiating. You're just boring and self-righteous.

Your lack of self-awarness is rather alarming, Aidan.

"Is your name Hitler?"

You were not to know, but my late step-father escaped from Hitler and the Nazi invasion of Czeckoslavakia as an eight year old boy and arrived in Britain on the kindertransport. He never saw his Jewish parents again and they died in a concentration camp.

As said, you were not to know that. But anybody who throws around the name of the 20th century's most evil, genocidal mass murderer in the context of a disgareement on a cricket forum at this time of growing anti-semitism is profoundly insensitive.

Is your name Corbyn?

I too lost relatives. admittedly not in the death camps, but in POW camps and in combat.

Like Mel Brooks I don't waste time despising him and therefore prefer to mock him. However as you are offended I withdraw the comment and apologise.

The points in the rest of my posts still stand though.

What the **** are you on about? Who said anything about who is more British? Are you saying that people with Indian heritage are not more likely to follow the domestic league in their family's country of origin? Why do you think I mean white? What about those of Pakistani origin? Sri Lankan? Bangladeshi? And of course the Caribbean?

Do you know any people from Indian origins? I have spent years involved with cricket and hockey in the Midlands and I don't think I have come across any British Asians who are not proud of their heritage. They have their own code in the census ffs. Why do you chose not to recognise them?

Or are we pretending that, on average, British Indians are not more likely to follow cricket than other ethnic groups?

Oh and adil rashid is of Pakistani background so interesting that you put him in with those from Indian heritage.

I know it was a few years ago but when the IPL was on ITV4 they sometimes exceeded half a million viewers and doubled the viewing figures for the England Test match that was going on at the same time. Obviously it's difficult to compare a freeview channel with Sky, but I reckon the games that the BBC will be showing from 2020 will get decent viewing figures and hopefully attract a new audience.
