That's two pretty fifties in one innings. Clearly cheating.

Yeah but he had to do something to get out of the atrocious rut he's been in for the last couple of years, he tried getting injured constantly but that didn't seem to work!

Highly predictable that Root wouldn't convert, and with it, England went down in a heap. 13 tons to 34 fifties and 5 to 21 since the start of the Pakistan series in the UAE which shows the trend of his levelling off. Thread renamed!

and cricinfo had a relevant 50/100 conversion ratio. Read it and weep.

Career-

50/100s

Joe Root - 34/13
Virat Kohli - 15/20
Steven Smith - 21/21
Kane Williamson -25/17

Had a real determination about him and seemed totally focused yesterday. Had he carried on batting I would have backed him to make that century, and although I didn't get to see his dismissal today it was, as you say, not remotely unexpected after the break. If he had Smith or Kohli's mental approach to batting he'd be incredible.

We used to have Cook building solid innings and Root who liked to press on and get the score moving quickly; and make big hundreds. Now we have Cook struggling to get to 40 and Root making pretty fifties. Plus three fairly-newbies. No surprise we’re not compiling those essential 400+ totals.

Yes, this is a big part of our downfall. In Brisbane the Aussies were able to post a good total off the back of a big one from Smith. Root hasnít remotely given his side anything similar.

A new entrant for this thread. Jeet Raval has had a strong start to his international career except for one thing. He's passed fifty 6/14 times to date, but no centuries.

Converting more fifties into hundreds is the ideal for England but, before they get that far, they need to start turning the pretty little twenties and thirties into half-centuries. Thus far this series, England's top seven has passed 20 on fifteen occasions, with five of those being converted into fifties. Australia's top seven has passed 20 twelve times, going on to pass 50 on seven occasions. I think it was Tony Greig who said he could always forgive his batters falling for single figures but would go spare when they got out for 25 or 30.

His average is fantastic for a player with no centuries.
