Not sure I agree. If one of the three fifties had become a century, England score 400. If two, perhaps even 500.

Getting out on 49 today has ruined the Sky statisticians' day. Root was on course to have broken some record re the number of consecutive scores of 50 or more in Old Trafford tests.

77, 254, 71*, 52, 49 ...

Think we're up to 27 50s now, with no more centuries added. At least Mo, Hash and Faf passed 59!

Can't really say that Ali didn't try hard to get to his ton. Wasn't his fault the rest of the team got out before he could, given he was going well over a run a ball. A series for the bowlers, for sure, although England did just enough with the bat. In a way you could take it as a positive that there were so many contributions from 1-8.

George Dobell has tweeted that the suited and booted man in the picture has been dropped for his team's last t20 game.

Well his batting form in this format (and others!) has been iffy. But he's the captain and his team have a good chance of being quarter-finalists so the timing seems odd.

George Dobell is also the only one reporting this.

... But the team announcement following the toss confirms that Dobell was right.

Welcome to Dawid Malan btw. Will it be he or Westley who appears here more before the series is out.

That Malan innings belongs in the other thread. If you were to do a runs weighting thing, a West Indies handicap of say 60 runs would make Root's 130odd a worthy entrant.

Nah mate. Wasn't a proper gritty one.

Further to my last replies, the Warwickshire commentators say that it was Bell's own decision, i.e. he dropped himself.

He's always been a good judge of a player.

The Bears have got a couple of new big-hitting batsmen and Warwickshire now seem on course for victory v Lancs, assisted by some atrocious Lancashire fielding.

Yet another one for Joseph Edward on his own ground. You get the feeling he was really hacked off but he given that he got dropped so badly early in his innings he should be thankful he got that far.

I hope the WI batting performance today has given Root pause for thought. After all he didn't have to face Anderson and Broad.

It doesn't bother our still-smitten commentators though. Nasser is still drooling over his record-breaking consecutive-match 50s.

To be fair to Root, however, I think he knows he has to address this.

Like Malan and Westley before him, at least Stoneman will be able to say he once passed 50 in test cricket

Scoring a Test fifty is nothing for a failed England batsman to 'brag' about, Caddick and Harmison almost made one (both HS of 49no) and plenty of bowlers have made them or get very close.

A few highest scores of England bowlers (none quite 'all rounders')

Tudor 99no (50 x1)
DeFreitas 88 (50 x4)
Swann 85 (50 x5)
Emburey 75 (50 x10)
Gough 65 (50 x2)
Old 65 (50 x2)
Pringle 63 (50 x1)
Giles 59 (50 x4)
Cork 59 (50x 3)
Schofield 57 (50 x1)
Dilley 56 (50 x2)
Finn 56 (50 x1)
Plunkett 55no (50 x1)
Ealham 53no (50 x2)
Salisbury 50 (50 x1)

Dilley can even boast WHEN he made his highest score, a certain Test in 1981 at Headingley more famously linked to a certain Ian Botham.....

Maybe some were "no mugs with the bat" but they may well end up having done more than any batsman clinging to a fifty as the biggest achievement in their Test career. Sure some had quite long Test careers, but others like Finn show a fifty means little in the Test batting hall of prestige.

A 'big' fifty maybe, say 75-80 or higher, but just over or not even on halfway towards a hundred is literally no biggie.....

Just see where their high scores would sit in a table of non-batsmen, and in this day and age they ought to be humiliated not to leave the Test arena without a hundred as they tend to get plenty of chances these days and pitches are better, such that even Lyth, Compton, Robson and Jennings got one before being dumped......

Thought some might like to see a list of a few lower order players who've made fifties for England, not going back too far. Few interesting names on the list, and near misses in Caddick and Harmison.

Bottom line is Tudor can laugh as long as he lives that he got closer to a hundred than any batsmen who didn't reach that landmark.......... (well bar any who were also 99no which is unlikely to happen, not very often anyway and not get another chance to make a hundred)

England have binned several openers in recent history despite them making a century in their first few games - Lyth, Robson, Jennings, so yeah a fifty doesn't mean a huge amount.
