It'd be nice to see our cricketers putting in as much effort as our very unfortunate Rugby team, though.

This is a cool stat.

Craig Overton first man to bowl Steve Smith in a Test match in Australia since Trent Boult in November 2015. Faced 2,131 balls since then

He bowled well once he settled down I thought. England's opening spell was rubbish.

Pity we were unable to capitalise on the Smiff wicket.

If England had chosen to bat they would have been happy with that score.

They ARE our best bowlers without a shadow of a doubt. However, not knowing what length to bowl (or being too scared to bowl it) despite 900 test wickets is utterly baffling. It would have been nice to see Woakes pick up the slack today but he has looked like a very average cricketer on this tour so far (excellent run out aside).

Excellent day today. Thought Anderson bowled really well to get his four wickets and glad we denied Hussey a century. Think 245 is well below par and if Cook and co can replicate their form from Brisbane we might just have a chance to bury the ghosts of four years ago.

Although the bowling improved later, it was astonishing that the bowlers did not realise that what would normally be half volley to most batsmen is a good length ball to Handsome. Lord knows enough of the squad must have seen him playing at Yorkshire.

He mentioned it at Brisbane as well although I canít be sure it was Stoneman. But surely they wouldnít have two players encumbering themselves in that way.

This is where you you need a wild Harmison to draw blood like the 2005 Ashes series with Ponting.

There's no English bowler with the pace to rattle them like a Devon Malcolm.

Even a Bob Willis circa 81 would be handy right now.

It's all way too friendly fast medium pace.
Your continued references to Harmison as a terror-inducing maniac are a bit fanciful.

Itís Groundhog Day isnít it. Every test match they open the bowling, bowl too short, go off for lunch or have a drinks break, recommence with a better line and say afterwards that they realised they needed to adjust it. They have played 240 test matches between them.

I suspect that Anderson and Broad were throwing a collective strop after Root's decision to bowl first, which however has successfully delayed the moment when it becomes clear that we haven't got enough first-innings runs. As for Woakes, I think he has had three fantastic test matches but has been awful in every other match. Average would thus be a considerable improvement.

Fully agree. Jimmy and Broad just don't seem to get over the fact that they are not 25 yo any more and short of a length doesn't do the biz in Oz unless you have pace. Hopefully common sense will prevail in the first session.

Not just in Oz. I saw them waste a green pitch at Lord's against India a few years ago - the one on which the gentle Bhuv Kumar repeatedly put the ball on the spot to achieve a 6-fer. I swore at the time that an attack of Masters, Rushworth and Stevens would have shot the tourists out for below 150.

It is odd, isn't it? You can go back years and as MF says it's like Groundhog Day. Even bowlers of the quality of Botham never seemed to realize that you weren't going to bounce the likes of Viv Richards or Sachin out. TBH this is quite a feeble Aussie batting line up and I don't think the likes of Smith and Warner would get close to an all time best Oz side, even in my lifetime. They cut their teeth on "just short of a length" though

Itís not some random woman commentator, itís our own Alison Mitchell who has been a regular on TMS for some time.
