The captain has the last word. Fletcher likes to hover in the background and let the team run itself. He has said that he likes to be thought of as a consultant. The management committee (now probably Vaughan, Nixon, Collingwood with Flintoff banished after his midnight swim) discuss who they think but Vaughan takes his choice on to the field.

Pity Steve McClaren can't do the same.

I dont know about that. Look at the WC when the players decided the system. I would suggest in any sport letting the grunts decide what to do is a mistake. The fact the manager is wrong doesnt change that.

I sincerely hope that Nixon isn't on the committee, he's only been in the side two minutes. Admittedly he's done well but it's a cheek to bring him in as management. Anyway I think the whole managemement committee idea stinks.

Me too. I think Nixon's experience in county cricket might have got him into the committee and he has said Fletcher and Vaughan have been picking his brain. I don't see Vaughan turning to his vice captain (whoever that is) on the field but to Nixon.

You don't see him turning to the vice-captain because there isn't one. At least nobody has been announced. There was all that speculation about it being Collingwood and we've heard nothing more. Maybe it's Nixon.

Well they are not telling anyone because people might jump to conclusions but if Vaughan has to leave the field for any reason someone would have to be in charge. It could be Collingwood or Bell. I can't see it being Pietersen, Joyce, Anderson, Mahmood, Panesar or Bopara.

It would be quite fun if it was Anderson, though, wouldn't it?

I think he would be quite bossy but I wouldn't trust his field placings. He does get cross with dropped catches and shoddy fielding. He would never make it as a full captain just on post match interview technique.

It could take a good 10 minutes even more if there were some changes to the side.

Looks like Bell and Panesar are better players out of the team than in it!

Surely all players are better when they're not in the team.

Well at least KP hasn't suffered the jinx that seems to hit our players who rise to the top of the rankings
