Your reservation on the basis of his average is fair enough, but I suppose the factors in favour would include:
(a) someone's got to bat 3;
(b) Root doesn't want to;
(c) there are 27 undroppable all-rounders in the team, so the chances of being able to pick a specialist batsman for long enough to see if he's any good are rather slim; and (as if on cue)
(d) Stokes's crease-occupational mindset in recent tests.

On the actual non question (apart from to you and Jock) of whether Ali bowled really well or not, he was clearly excellent, as JRC has detailed above and any remotely sentient watching of the game or highlights or reading of reports would tell you. You can still say that heís been bad at other times if you want.
Why, thank you. I am very grateful.

It seems to have escaped your notice that I praised Ali for putting the ball in the right places in both innings.

I appreciate, however, that an acknowledgement of this may not have sat well with the false assumptions and the familiar bluster.

Perhaps such analyses would reflect some reality. I'd recommend giving it a try some time.

Most of the people who've batted at 3 since Trott have averaged less than that.

Stokes has often shown an ability to play himself in carefully after a top order collapse and rebuild the innings from 6. Under the circumstances I don't think it would be ludicrous to see how he might fare at 3.

Actually, you said he put it 'mostly' in the right places (because you clearly can't give him a full compliment) and that he gained impetus from bad batting in the first innings.

We are still waiting for your wicket analysis to outline the bad batting....

I think "mostly" is correct. Unless, of course, you are suggesting he didn't bowl a single bad ball.

I'll rely on people's recent memories to support the bad batting claims.

There's one one batsman who fits that criteria (Burns), but the issue is we need three of them.

Not at all, I spotted your grudging and over and inaccurately qualified praise. I also spotted that you’ve still been unable in any way to justify your qualification when asked for specifics. I’m not sure whether that’s because ironic whippets are quite hard to catch, as an ironic whippet could be quite slow. If you do catch him, perhaps he could help you with the hilarity of you criticising anyone else for false assumptions (Moeen can’t possibly have just bowled really well, must be the batsmen getting themselves out, haven’t really watched it) and bluster (have far too many better things to do to carry on the debate I’ve suddenly noticed I’ve not got a leg to stand on in).

That's only your interpretation and we know how unreliable, particularly in the realm of statistics, that may be.

I really have to smile at your repeated latching on to the "ironic whippet" thing, borrowed as it is from someone who seems to have only a passing acquaintance with reality. Perhaps we may glean something from that.

Has Moeen been snuffing out D/L's whippets as well as Jock's cats? Hasn't anyone reported him to the RSPCA?
