Root's excuse of coming in at 3 ...

WJB needs a Moeen style dropping.

Bairstow's attitude in the last Test appeared pretty pathetic. Folk have been dropped for less. Gets the gloves back and responds with that. Thanks for nothing.

Only Buttler and Stokes along with Curran and Moeen come out of this summer's batting with any credit whatsoever.

Bairstow 260 @ 23.6
Root 311 @ 28.3
Jennings 172 @ 19.1

Pretty poor when two of those are considered your best batsmen. This is a home summer too, not alien conditions.

Bit harsh on Woakes - one of only two tons (Buttler) in the series

50s vs India

WJB and Curran are the only others who have passed 50 twice.

Root was unlucky in that both times he was set for a big score he was run out by his partner.

Bairstow's average is only late 30s and dropping, so perhaps we've just overestimated how good he actually is. Prior for example was averaging mid 40s at a similar stage of his career. It's still not a bad average for a keeper but we can't really afford to rely on Jonny as much as we thought we could.

That burst of wickets probably make a Day 4 finish more likely than seemed earlier.

I'll no doubt return to this theme regularly.

Two runs per over so far today.

Geoff Boycott will be telling them to slow down.

I guess the question is what is a par score on this wicket. Maybe not as easy as people thought a couple of hours ago, or have India just bowled well.

That's what happens sometimes. It's also fair to say that some of the commentators are suggesting that his running is not exactly perfect.

The rest of the time he has been poor. He seems incapable of playing balls on their merits and is gaining a Pietersen-like desire to move the scoreboard quickly early in his knock which then means he's playing shots to balls which aren't appropriate.

Apologies to Woakes, forgot about Lord's, where YJB put in his one worthy knock too.

Thank goodness for byes. Without them England’s run rate would be below 2.

I think only Cook could claim to be unlucky, even then his bat didn't come down straight.

India have bowled well, as they have for most of the series.

That was fun. Stones, This will be the last time, with Cook highlights.

Apparently Mo has played and missed 32 times in this innings, which is more than 20% of balls faced! That’s staggering.

Amazing how Moeen is still there. Got to admire his tenacity.

There's been plenty of those where he's played well inside the line, even ignoring those he's still genuinely missed a lot!

Yeah, I enjoyed it too - one of my favourite Stones tracks from the period of theirs I like best.

I have to also admit - having dissed the guy earlier - that I enjoyed Bumble's ramble about his trainspotting youth.
