So in these conditions, who would you want coming in? Kohli, Smith or Root?

No brainer on this one, Root wins every time.
Hmm... but it is also the last innings with a set target to chase. Surely that gives Kohli some chance?

Kohli is looking good. Mind you this is no fifth day pitch.

Sharma and Kohli both gone now to Philander. Rabada having no luck it seems yet SA have the game by the scruff unless Pandya can do an encore.

This is all going to end rather quickly now as Pandya nicks off with AB taking a good catch.

Certainly AB returning has been a boon for SA.

Rabada gets one.

Well played SA. The counter-attack from ABD and Faf on day 1 really made the difference, I feel. Once again, our batsmen show lack of application in overseas conditions. Can we pick ourselves up and do better? I doubt if it is going to be any different.

Yes, well played SA - completely outclassed India with the ball, even with a seamer short for half the game. India just aren't as good in these conditions and to compound their troubles don't pick their strongest XI. Nothing is impossible but very difficult to see a different result in the remaining games

Actually, I thought our bowlers did pretty decently. The fact that they were a bowler short should have been better utilized by our batsmen. Where they did well was in counter-attacking effectively on day 1. We just did not bat long enough or together enough to cause trouble.

I don't know CM. Excellent and praiseworthy as the SA counter-attack was, for a bowling side to be going at four an over on a pitch like this really points to a bit of indiscipline to me. This was put into stark perspective by the Indian bowlers themselves today.

This is not by any stretch to defend the batsmen. They are ridiculously over-hyped, none more than Kohli, whereas the bowlers are the opposite. But, frankly speaking, the SA batsmen didn't cover themselves in glory in this match either (two fifties in two innings) and so I'm not convinced they would have done any better had they been facing bowling of the caliber of Rabada, Philander etc.

But ultimately what matters is that we just aren't good enough as a package as SA in these conditions, and won't be in England or Australia later this year either. The problems are too deep and structural and there's little incentive for the powers-to-be do anything about them given the money the IPL generates.

That pretty much summed up the thoughts of most England fans after Brisbane!!

Absolutely spineless by the Indian batting line up. Their bowlers had set up probably their best chance of winning and they folded like that. A little bit of fight from Ashwin who ground it out at times but like one of the comms was saying, believe it was Sunny, that all these guys push out at the ball like its ODI cricket.

It's not, someone may wana remind them.

A very expected result at the conclusion of the First Test. To be fair, Pandya did rather well as did the bowlers in the second innings. The batsmen, as expected, came a cropper in seaming conditions and excellent bowling. I guess those net sessions in lieu of practice matches helped a lot. And playing infinite amount of matches with Sri Lanka. Certainly.

I'll say this- not knowing something is fine. But not knowing something and not knowing that you don't know something is a recipe for disaster.

And probably many Australian fans after Trent Bridge in 2015, or any time in the sub-continent recently. Touring has not been a fruitful exercise in the past few years.

Still, two tests to go, it only takes an inspired spell of determined innings to get India back into the series.

Are Australia the only test team with the patience to bat properly ?

Bavuma made way for Du Plessis returning, having played against Zimbabwe. It's hard to see how he fits in a full strength team with Dr Villiers back. I assume Phelukwayo has more chance of replacing Steyn unless they go to Ngidi (who I'd never even heard of until this thread).
