Luke Wells just hit 32 off an over, with a no ball on top to make 34. Never seen him play like this.

He's gone....and so has the opportunity of a new record.

And, as so often happens when a batsman is struggling, Luke Wright comes in after a massive stand and gets out for a couple.

Fabulous day at Hove! The return of Wells transforms what looked like a dodgy Sussex top six. Laurie Evans may now find himself relegated to a white-ball only specialist.

Flat wicket but Sussex now have two days for Philander, Archer and Jordan to bowl out Durham for a second time and a Sussex win will throw the promotion campaign wide open with Notts and Kent drawing today.

Kent v Sussex at Tunbridge Wells on Friday looks like a very juicy fixture that may impinge strongly on the final table come September.

Worcs look strong and a right royal battle for two promotion places is on the cards between Notts, Worcs, Kent and hopefully Sussex and Northants, too, that could well not be settled until the last day of the season.

Fantastic effort from Luke Wells, who I've been bigging up for years for meagre returns, however I think the real star turn of the day was Colin Ingram with his 4th hundred in his last six innings to deny Notts.

I suspect they'll have closer to a day and a half, as Sussex endeavour to pile on more and more runs to sap the visitors' morale. But, yes, it's going to take some batting effort by Durham to avoid defeat and thereby take their tally to half of the original points deduction.

Suddenly the Notts reports on Cricinfo are attracting many comments. I wonder why that is...

What is it with Chris Jordan's batting that so many people seem to like? I've never thought he's more than a decent lower order batsman but he always seems to be referred to as an all-rounder and has batted at 7, above Wiese, for Sussex in this game.

Talented enough but is in one of those can't-put-bat-on-ball trots at the moment - last four innings 0,1, 0, 0 . But not that much worse than poor Harry Finch, opening the batting?

Sussex have announced themselves as non-contenders for promotion and it is hard to see beyond Notts topping the table and Kent and Worcs duke-ing it out for the second promotion spot.

I've seen Sussex in three matches across two comps this season and there is something seriously wrong at the heart of that club.

A hugely talented bunch of players, but seemingly lacking focus and motivation.

The seam bowling rivals the best in the country - Jordan, Magoffin, Philander and Archer with Shahzad in reserve plus the under-rated Wiese, who was perhaps the most impressive of all their quality attack on day one of the game v Kent at Tunbridge Wells.

Then there are two of the most promising young quicks on the circuit in Garton and Whittingham who can't get near the Sussex first XI but would surely walk into the first team at any of the counties above them in div two , apart from Notts.

Unsurprisingly, with an atack like that the bowlers have picked up maximum pts.

But the batters have netted just seven feeble pts in four matches - and five of those came in one innings against a woefully out-of-sorts-and-feeling-sorry-for-themselves Durham.

Sussex have been in a seemingly inexorable freefall for at least four seasons now.

The club has adopted an - initially admirable - don't-panic-steady-as-she-goes policy. But as it has not halted the decline, perhaps 'panic measures' are now what is needed.

Chris Adams as head coach? Bring in an overseas captain from outside the cosy 'family club' mentality? Find someone in the squad who can average more than 12 as an opening batsman (Robson? Evans? Burgess?). Junk the journeymen kolpaks and sign a serious Sangakkara/Handscomb/Voges/Ingram-style overseas batsman?

Whatever it takes, something needs to change radically or Sussex will be challenging Durham with their 48 pt deduction for the wooden spoon.

Durham must be the surprise of the season.

Played 4, lost 3.

Only half their penalty erased.

A season too far for some of their stars? And a season too soon for some of the youngsters? Or just bad luck at crucial times?

Won't get easier when they lose Jennings to England.

I think the points penalty weighs heavily around their necks.

They made a sporting declaration against Glamorgan that went Glamorgan's way. What else could they do? They are so far behind.

The reality is that Durham are no longer the force they were. Rushworth Abd Onions were the attack of the County Championshio not so long back but now one is always injured and the other is past his best. Also don't forget they lost two big batsmen to Surrey. Stokes and Wood will spend most of the season with England.

As a result a lot of new faces have had to come in quickly. It will take time. Strangely this ECB punishment might be a blessing in disguise.

Thank you Sussex, who have done Kent a huge favour by almost certainly batting Worcs out of the game at Hove today,

Notts probably nailed on for promotion, which means Kent and Worcs slugging it out for the second promotion place.

Which is delicious when you consider the bad executive blood between the two counties. Worcs v Kent starting at New Road in two weeks time will be a needle match - unless the Severn floods again, in which case Kent will throw another trantrum and demand all the points!

AS things stand, it could be a very good week for Kent despite not playing - Sussex looking more and more likely of wrapping up the win vs Worcs, which would leave Worcs 5 pts behind us now having played the same number of games; IF Derbys can get the last wicket soon, then chase down the 200-odd they will need for their first win of the season, then that would leave Notts only 8 pts ahead having played a game more - even a draw still puts them within reach.

Positive signs finally from Derbyshire but you do wonder if the next win will ever come?

More than anything I'm stunned we took 20 Nottinghamshire wickets.

Harry Gurney says he's surprised at how big the gulf is between Divisions One and Two. This says a man who has 13 wickets at 33! What an arrogant Muppet. He's a Division Tow bowler if ever I saw one.

This would appear to be Notts biggest challenge this season, their own pig headed arrogance. They have a few very good bowlers and far more very average ones.

If the "gulf" is so big, how comes Essex are 2nd in Division 1 and Durham have yet to win a game in Division 2?
