Have Essex signed another overseas player for the rest of the season? Is Amir back outside of international commitments?

He's only here for the start of the season, presumably until the main overseas player is available:

The Champions have also re-signed Wagner from May until the end of July. I hope Sam Cook is available as Porter and Cook taking the new ball and Wagner as first change is a great seam attack playing to everyone's strengths.

Don't forget Matt Coles. I've known and befriended the lad since he made his debut for Kent as a teenager nine years ago and he's a supreme talent that nobody has yet got the best from...

Rob Key came closest and I though Silverwood would have been superb with him (indeed he told me CW was the reason he signed for Essex).

There is a gem of a cricketer in Matt waiting to bust out. We've seen glimpes of it but I hope he blossoms at Chelmsford into the absolute champion he has it in him to become.

He might have to fight hard for a CC place as Essex will doubtless play Harmer every game, leaving room for just three seamers. Although, Porter might well find himself away on inferior business this year.

Took wickets the other day for the 2nd XI. Must admit I was surprised when Walter got the nod. In the Championship I had him behind Coles, Quinn (when fit) and Plom and then vying with Dixon and Beard.

It seems as if Essex view Coles as a ltd overs player and Walter as the better championship player. I’d have it the other way round.

And they opened the bowling this morning as well.

Hopefully Siddle will come good but the one we’re waiting for is Sam Cook who emerged late last season (26 fc wickets at 27). He unfortunately broke a finger Thursday so missed out but should be opening with Porter.

Porter, Cook, Siddle/Wagner and Harmer should be a viable attack.

Porter and Harmer is a viable attack. 150 wickets between them last year and 2 5/s already this season.

When he was at Kent he went around the park. Some of his better games were with the bat

Excellent work by the Essex lower order to set Lancs what should be a highly testing target of 320. The evergreen James Foster, just turned 38, hung around for nearly 3 hours for his 69, while Simon Harmer again underlined what a fine all round contributor he is with 49. He and Ports will be eagerly flexing those fingers overnight.

I know but that's not sustainable and is one of the reasons last season was so special because it was so unlikely that two players (plus the overseas) could carry an attack like that. If nothing else England will have to call up Porter if he continues like this.

2 big wickets for Walter yesterday in Livingstone and Chanderpaul. Siddle's two wickets were both test players as well.

I know this question comes up after a few weeks of every season - but why isn’t Matt Coles playing? Yesterday, Essex’s commentator described it as a “mystery”.
