Strauss wanted to concentrate on white ball cricket so the Lions haven't had any red ball cricket since Jan 15 says Flower.

In the Test side we know there are positions up for serious debate in the selections for the winter and in a way we don't have the in-depth knowledge that we want because we haven't exposed these young guys to any red ball cricket over the last year to eighteen months at Lions level.
Thanks for the info ... Sri Lanka in February can be beautiful, might pop along for a weekend.

I don't suppose you know the proposed date or venue for the game in the UAe?

Is the SL tour happening at the same time as the three ODIs?

Worcestershire's Joe Leach should definitely be batting above Ball and probably Roland-Jones.

He would be if he was good enough to get into the squad. But he's not.

Presumably the Lions games might be after the India tour has started? If so, not expecting much of a case for panic call ups from them mid-tours.

No mention of Dan Lawrence so far. For a kid his age his record is special.

Realistically I don't see Westley going and would think that's more suggested out of hope than expectation. Would think DBD and Borthwick are nailed on as two players on the cusp of test call ups, and Jennings and Gubbins have had sufficiently good seasons to get them in, too. I'd take Clarke and Livingstone for the last batting slots, Foakes as keeper and then SCurran 8, Leach 11 and god knows who else at 9 and 10. Who else is realistically close to being called up? Don't think Roland Jones will be in the frame any longer, but he seems the most likely as the experienced head in the attack. Maybe Footitt's strong finish to the season gets him in, too. Then for the reserves... Lawrence, Rayner (either could be in the XI too), JOverton probably. And two more.

Thought you hated dibbly dobbly medium pacers at international level.

On further examination, though, he could be a good candidate for the R Clarke role (those of a sensitive disposition may prefer not to look):

Presumably Jake Ball will go as he's not in the seniors. Elder Curran may also. If they want to take an elder statesman I guess it could be Footitt, Brooks or TRJ.

Is in the ODI squad which I steered clear of, but yes he'll go if there's no clash. Tom has struggled in Division one, although his past record might get him in plus he's strong in white ball stuff.

I was only commenting on the batting order, not whether he should have been in the side.

My Lions squad would look something like this:

Bell-Drummond
Lees
Jennings
Westley
J. Clarke
Northeast (c)
Lawrence
Donald
Simpson
Billings
S. Curran
Ball
Stone
Miles
Norwell
Archer/van Gugten - are they eligible?
Rayner

Tom Curran bowls at 76-78mph. Nowhere near quick enough. Topley would be in contention if he was playing but Ball and Roland-Jones really is as good as it gets outside the first team squad.

Jordan would be another one likely to go I guess.

The continuing winding up of SVaZ is admirable but otherwise I think that's fair enough. There's quite a bit of talent about, which is nice.

Roland-Jones bowls at 80mph but Fraser is determined to get him in every possible squad. I wouldn't pick him.
