It's been keeping consistently low. Can't think anything on a length will fizz off the pitch though.

Good fightback from England this morning, the people that were calling for Broad to be dropped are looking a bit silly, he's responded like all good players do.

When they did a close up of the pitch yesterday there looked like patches where the ball would break through the surface before the end of the match, not saying they'll necessarily fizz up but they might keep stupidly low.

Well possibly, but more to the point, let's see if England can mop up these last 2 and get runs here. We can speculate, but with sensible batting, this is a 500 pitch first up, even on days 2 and 3. Get the last 2 out, bat for 5-6 sessions, win or at least draw the game. England should be looking at not batting last.

If this were England we would be calling it a horrific collapse.

Yeah I cut my first post rather short, I meant we need to get big runs this innings because I don't think we'll be getting many in the second even though the pitch looks pretty docile.

There are lots of runs on here if England are patient. Oz's score was under par at 320ish.

As I speak, Stoneman goes. 500 needed. Root is due a score. Vince, Malan, Cook, Bairstow, somebody has to get a big 100 with others chipping in with pretty little 50s.

Could have responded a test or 2 earlier when the series was still on the line.

Vince goes LBW despite a soupçon of an inside edge, yet he opted not to review. What a shame - he was scoring well against Lyon. Now, what can Joe Root do?

Chalk one up for the optimists today, after England’s senior bowlers have won the battle and now the senior batsmen Cook and Root are taking advantage of the lack of Starc and a subpar Cummins.

Still some way to go to get the lead yet optimism seems appropriate.

Weve been dog **** today, Poms have shown some heart, well done to them.

Well done to Cook, hes hanging in there but needed to do this when the pressure was on and when it mattered, too little too late

Cook and Broad have certainly answered their critics so far in this test, Cook with a ton and Broad with 4 wickets.

Good to see England showing some fight and not rolling over like they've done in previous Ashes series here.

A long way to go yet but they are well placed to win this test or at least avoid another loss.

Poms very good today, great fightback, well done to Cook, should still be punted obviously but nice innings.

Hes the only bloke ive ever seen get a ton and celebrate as though he'd just found out hes got HIV, hes a very strange person, his energy as a person is diabolically low.

He comes across 24/7 like hes just found out his whole family has disappeared in a plane crash FFS. Is Cook the saddest most unenthusiastic man on earth?

Letting these old dogs hang around like a bad smell so they can scrap up another decent innings and prolong their careers is only bad for England.
Theres absolutely zero to gain from that for english cricket and everything to lose.
