Absolutely. But there remains the challenge of avoiding the whitewash - which would be the third in four tours. Need to do this.

To take issue with those who state it no longer matters once the series is lost; were that the case, they wouldn’t play these 4th and 5th tests. 150,000 spectators on the first two days here tells us that it is still important test cricket.

Winnng this game matters. There will be no let up from Australia. I’m relieved England have dug deep and shown pride and determination to fight back after a difficult first day. Channel Nasser Hussain and become hard to beat - there is never a time to give up on even a lost Ashes.

Why do they do this? I pop out to the kitchen to pour a drink and hear a shout go up. Oh no, Root out in the 50s again. No it’s a replay from yesterday. Cook & Root still there.

Lack of concentration from Root again. He's starting to really pee me off now. A boy when we need a man.

England still need 109 to equal Aus’s innings.

Poor shot from Root, didn't help he was moving from front to back foot without really getting set to hit the ball, seemed to be trying to go over Lyon as well rather than rolling his wrists.

What gets me is the way the commentators always say he will be cross with himself, refraining from any actual criticism by themselves.

That’s simply not good enough from the England captain. As tame a surrender as you’re likely to see.

Another inside edge not reviewed, what's going on here? This didn't look like a tiny nick that Vince got either.

Honestly I didn't see the inside edge in real time but it looked like it was hitting outside the line to me so I'd have told Malan to review it in any case.

The commentators say they always felt a nick but I'm not so sure with the tiny ones but that looked like a healthy edge from Malan so not sure why he didn't feel anything.

If there's a way to mess up England will no doubt always find it though!

If he’d looked at his bat, there was probably a red splotch from the new ball! Unbelievable that he wouldn’t have called for review.

Yeah probably! And as I thought when they showed ball tracking he was hit outside the line.

Bairstow out to a brainless attempt at a cut shot, as said by MVP I think it's a ball you should be looking to pull not cut and that's before the spin brings it closer to you.

Ali looks like he's just going to go for it here, could be a fun session (or a short one for Ali!)

Another good morning for the poms but cant believe Ali came out and threw all caution to the wind like that and batted like a peanut, no idea what hes thinking.
Stark proving to be a massive loss but poms have been spirited, credit to them

Swann mounted a spirited defence of Ali’s tactics: it was a plan to put Lyon off his game, Lyon being used to our batsmen offering nothing but meek defence. Swann claimsd this worked as Lyon hasn’t looked the same since. And/or, Moeen went in with an intent to throw caution to the wind and inject some energy.

It’s taking an age to overtake Austealia’s Score...

Ali’s cameo was good while it lasted, but was all too short. Good on Chris Woakes for blocking an end while Cook carries serenely on.
