****ing hell Root you nob-end.

And I don't really know why Starc was risked for this Test. Seems unnecessary unless he was 100%.

Angry

Got up in time for last few overs..went from a healthy score and possible big total to a moderate score and probable small total in 2 overs.

Brainless 15 minutes there from England.

Good knock from Malan though. Need him to bat on tomorrow.

Was set to be England's day until they lost Root and Bairstow with the new ball just before stumps.

The decision to not send in a nightwatchman ended up being costly, Ali and the England tail could fold for under 300 tomorrow.

Against a new ball too!! There really is no clear thinking in this team at all.

From being in charge with 2 overs to go to being in trouble 10 mins later.

England really stuffed up their day there in the end. Poor leadership by Root.

Honours shared today but taking into account the quality of both tails we might just have put our nose in front.

He will have a new nut, a night's rest and England's tail to bowl at tomorrow so will probably get a fivefer.

At three down, England had clearly won the day, but Root and Bairstow departing certainly tipped the balance. With a new ball in hand, the tail could capitulate and the deck is pretty flat.

Aussies will be hoping to go big because it is tipped to be 37 degrees on Sunday, so they may not want to bat last.

Australia's day, esp. with the length of the English tail. I fear a heavy defeat now, unless Australia collapse hopelessly in their first inning.

That **** from root was really bad but not nearly as bad as JB. What was he thinking? The pitch looks like it might dry quickly so I just hope we bowl last.

It is worth noting that starc is playing despite not being fit so talk of dead rubber form being irrelevant can be ignored. They want to win this.

Can't really agree with that. In any case you're straying into Michelle territory by pretending that your impression of who's being criticised has anything much to do with anything. People have been bagging Vince fairly relentlessly too. But Ali has been significantly worse than Vince with the bat, and from a more cushy batting position.

Same old story with the batting. Players getting in, looking good and then getting out. Be surprised if England get more than 300 all told. Looking at an innings defeat I reckon.

Aussies determined to break Starc?
Perhaps because he is hopeless at this level? Moeen has at least shown he can be a test cricketer and is one of our senior players, so performing even worse than Vince reflects extremely poorly on him. Need him to stick around tomorrow (tonight) though otherwise 300 is a bridge too far.

Anderson is better now than he was 4 years ago.

Yep, that’s the way I see it too. The pitch will be at it’s best on days 2 and 3 and a first innings total in the region of 275-325 will be woefully inadequate.

Still laughing at the “first” poor series nonsense .

Ali has another opportunity now to reinforce the opinions of the few who still think he is a test class batsman. At this juncture of the match, time spent batting is also important.

I wonder if he'll take this opportunity or just biff a few deliveries and give his wicket away.

It hangs in the balance for the first 2 hours of play tomorrow. If England fight back and dig in for at least 300-ish, they can still put up a fight. Get out too quickly and Aus romp home.

On the plus side, the ball is only 2 overs old so he's unlikely to face Lyon for a while. On the down side, the ball is only 2 overs old so he can expect some short stuff!!
