I don't know which squad has the oldest average age, but if it isn't Kent they must be right up there near the top.

They are a bit of a puzzle really; I tipped them to do poorly, but when you look at some of the players they have, and the records of those players, they should easily be able to compete. However, none of those guys made 1,000 runs last season (Denly did, who's gone); 800-odd runs isn't acceptable for someone like Key - they need guys like him to be up at the 1,300 mark. One wonders how many of them are really up to compete hard over 16 matches. Maybe a new coach will give them a lift?

Impressive from all rounder Matt Coles. Batting at number 9, 103* from 111 balls.

A decent start, I can't remember a batting total of over 500 in the whole of last year so to do so straight away is pretty impressive.

One thing though, which may be an indicator of the previous regimes not always getting the best out of former players, is the 12 wicket haul taken by Robbie Joseph this week for Leicestershire. Although Robbie's attitude was never that great, this has happened with other players who have gone from bit-part players at Kent to important players at other counties - David Masters, Michael Carberry, Niall O'Brien, etc never really fulfilling their true potential at Canterbury.

Some green shoots of optimism at Kent these days? A solid effort at Headingley, followed by a demolition job on Northants. Mike Powell's hundred certainly bodes well - he's always been known to have a lot of capability, but perhaps needed a new start at somewhere like Canterbury.

Well Jimmy Adams has said that a few of the guys brought in have something to prove and on paper it's been a great side, especially compared to the shambles of last year. Especially good to see Matt Coles performing both with bat and ball in the first 2 games. He spoke at my club's awards dinner a year or so back and effectively said that he wasn't a fan of the first class game and preferred T20 above the other formats, hopefully some good performances in the real stuff may help change his mind.

Well done Brendan Nash..first ton for Kent v Yorkshire. Is this the wettest start ever to a county championship?

I think it's emphasised by the fact that it comes after a run of relatively dry, and sometimes excellent starts to the season, weather wise. I can certainly remember in the days of the old B&H zonal matches, tables with plenty in the "no result" column.

Apparently 1903, 1924 and 1958 were the very worst seasons of all in overall terms, with almost continuous poor weather.

Yes..the May forecast is dire too..lets hope for a good summer to make up for it. Kent started the spring OK though.

I had the pleasure of witnessing that century - a delightful effort on a beautiful Spring day.

In fact, I've seen 4 days' Championship cricket out of 4 so far this season and have a suntan!

Still a decent start and nice to win our first T20 game against Surrey the other day.

Apparently we were quite close to signing Mohammad Ashraful on a short term T20 deal until his umpteenth Bangladeshi recall scuppered it. He's playing in the Kent Premier League for Blackheath, his batting has been decent enough scoring an early season ton, but his bowling has supposedly been excellent, taking a couple of wickets a game for not many at good economy.

Yay! Leicestershire played their part by declaring with only 3 down to make a game of it.

Well, that certainly throws the promotion race wide open. When Naik and Hoggard were holding on, I thought it was going to be Hampshire all over again but the strike bowlers did the business this time. Good stuff.

I still think the odds are weighted against Kent in the run in. Derbyshire at home won't be easy, and there has to be a worry about Wales staying dry the following week (when Yorkshire are at Chelmsford). But, you never know with these Div Two dogfights, which have thrown up the odd promotee from nowhere in past seasons.

I can see Derbyshire stuffing it up, they've got two promotion contenders to deal with and the weather is set to improve. Could easily lose both those matches and be overtaken. I'm going for Yorkshire and Kent getting promotion.

In the last two seasons Surrey and Worcs both snatched second place in their final match, having not occupied a promotion place at any earlier point in the season, whilst Northants and Glamorgan missed out after spending all season in the top two. Teams desperate to make up ground will take risks so we should get a few more unexpected wins like those at Scarborough and Leicester this week, especially if the weather stays dry.
