More Vince stats. Colly is going to be a coach on the Ashes tour, yet in FC cricket this year;-

Paul Collingwood - 51.20
James Vince - 34.82

Given how poor all the middle order candidates appear to be at catching (I seem to recall Vince in particular being hilariously inept) as well as batting maybe Colly should be recalled!

Perhaps it's like what happens at 10 Downing St where someone exits the building and walks down the street with the relevant document hand-held facing outwards.

It's very depressing that these are apparently the best players we have.

We're almost better off in picking a specialist fielder!

And Crane?
I’ve no problem with Crane’s selection

• Played in Oz last winter
• Unlikely to play in first test
• Will be valuable experience
• Bags of potential
• Has a terrific attitude
• Moeen very inconsistent at best

Def improvement from not selecting Rashid until thrown in at deep end in UAE.

If there are dead rubbers then I hope they pick him.

That maybe so, but remember the Aussies have a similar issue. They'd snap our hands off for Foakes or Buttler to keep wicket.

I see Foakes as a potential number 5 too, his current form is significantly better than Malan or Ballance.

I despair at the Ballance selection, seems Root gets his mate to tour with him is the only reason for him going. At least Vince is pretty to watch till he gets out.

Not sure in which universe James Vince is one of our best players. Has anyone ever done so little to justify a recall? Apart from Gary Ballance last year, of course.

I would say that we'll obviously see the end of the Baylis tenure and hopefully Root doesn't take to much flack but if it is true that it's him demanding Ballance they maybe he gets what's coming to him. You don't lose five-nil down there and escape criticism.

Cook managed to escape criticism from the main-stream media. Heck they even forgot his piffling batting returns from the two back-to-back series.

He is going to Australia as England coach but I wouldn't have a problem with him coming in at number 5. Third slip would be covered as well. Jennings, Ali, Westley, who will it be now?

If everyone's fit maybe Foakes is in the best starting XI:

Cook
Stoneman
Root*
Malan
Ali
Stokes
Bairstow+
Foakes
Woakes
Broad
Anderson

I'd shuffle your batting order (and take the gloves off Bairstow) but I feel that's the best XI (although I'd be happy for Ballance to play ahead of Malan if he scores runs in the warm up games).

Convinced of what? That he'd have a more enjoyable winter being in prison?

We have been con-Vinced and con-Ballanced by this squad.

I like to think myself as one of the more positive voices on here but we are Donald Ducked. We might even lose 6-0.

Roland Jones unlucky. As is the Somerset spinner.

Nasser was right about England going round in circles with selection. Very surprised to see Vance there. Botham wondering what Leach has to do to get in.

Why pleased? His behaviour is unbecoming for someone with a position of aurhority in the team. Strauss talks about looking carefully at the legal situation before making a decision. Why? After the pedalo incident Flintoff was sacked as vice-captain immediately. The vice-captaincy isn't nor has ever been (I believe) an appointment requiring official sanction. It's just the person who stands in for the captain when he's off the field or unavailable for a game.

Obviously Stokes will be a key player in the Ashes, assuming his current injury is minor, but his immature behaviour off and on the field (don't forget he's already got demerit points) doesn't make him the ideal vice-captain. As for the view that giving a maverick player responsibility will make him more mature ....

I've got to imagine TRJ is out because of injury so if he gets fit could well be added to the squad. Still unlucky, not sure about Leach getting much out of their wickets other than Sydney so not surprised at all that he's missed out.

Very true. Appropriate that a Cook should have teflon as one of his tools of trade.

I can't help agree about Leach. Down under is rarely a place where even good finger spinners succeed. Don't even know the next time England goes to Asia.
