Stokes ‘farmed the strike’ very well, refusing a number of singles, as Botham did at Headingley in 1981. You’ve got to be completely in control to be able to do that, the Aussies couldn’t get him away from the strike. Sir Ian has always preferred his 118 at Old Trafford to the Leeds 149, however he was dropped once during the 118, whereas at Headingley he had some luck but did not give a chance. Today’s knock was breathtaking, a great advert for the game.

Listened to TMS via on a dodgy VPN link in the US - sounded phenomenal.

Also that’s the spinner batsmen debate put to bed.

Lyon to be dropped after failing to defend 350 in fourth innings after being rubbish at lordís? Two shocking matches from Lyon and the choke of all chokes with the run out. Epic.

Yes, it won't be the tough days bowling that'll haunt his dreams for the rest of his life.

Passed Dennis Lillies’s test haul - I’m sure he’ll get over it.

But changes to England batting line up required for the next test.

an okay finish.

nothing like the tension that will come in next year with the '100" though.

I've seen this trotted out quite a bit, the Hundred isn't designed to compete with Ashes cricket. Anyway, probably for a different thread.

I did think that the choking aspect canít be overlooked. That from Lyon, the daft lbw review from Paine in particular.

I guess that Aussies might replace Pattinson for Starc next game. Donít think they reckon the former is good for two games on the trot.

Reckon this will also be Paineís last series as captain. Admire him loads as a keeper, he hasnít done that badly with the bat given he looks a little limited, but I think they may look to bed in Carey post Ashes. Will they go back to Smith?

I think it would be a bad idea to get Smith back in the role. He never looked a natural captain to me, and they would be better off letting him concentrate on piling up the runs (not that his output as captain particularly suffered. But as we saw, it was leading him to make terrible decisions in other things).

Maybe Cummins might a better option. Yes he’s a fast bowler and injury risks and so on but they can always reconsider if he’s struggling on that front. Looks a more natural leader.

What a great match that was, thanks to Ben Stokes for the most entertaining match in the history of the Ashes. This is year belongs to sir Ben Stokes.

So we just need one more win to ensure that Australia still have not won a series in their country since 2001. Obviously a win and a draw would be better.

Stokes' innings yesterday was altogether more intelligent than Botham's at Headingley '81. The concentration and self-belief (I witnessed the real match winner the following day).
I reckon that, whatever they say, the Australians will be mentally scarred by this loss and will struggle to compete at OT and the Oval.

The other bonus is that Stokes is unlikely to become a TV commentator and so will probably not bore us senseless with the repetitive garbage that Botham has produced for so long.

In some ways, if we want to compare performances between the two all rounders, I'd suggest looking at Botham's 5/1 at Egblaston. In both games the Aussies looked on course to win only for England's talismanic player to break their spirits at the last.

Just cos you're blinkered and biased against him doesn't make it true, especially as you have already admitted you watched him on the radio. Lyon will be there for the next two tests and well beyond. Selectors oddly enough don't overlook 357 test wickets.

Not so sure, Australia only have to win one of the two remaining matches. Remember the talisman Smith will be back, and are more likely to feel shortchanged by the umpires than mentally scarred. England still have a lot to do to save this series, and still don't know their best XI.

I'm not sure he's that much good even for one game on the trot. He's more bark than bite: two wickets at Edgbaston and three here, bowling in a four-man attack. Dropping Siddle looked like a mistake to me -- he's more reliable and was missed yesterday IMHO.
