England v South Africa 1st Test Lords 6-10 July

Hooray - the proper cricket starts tomorrow and neither camp is keeping their cards close to their chests. England appear to have named their team and the only decision for SA appears to be between De Bruyn and Markram.

England:

Cook (c)
Jennings
Ballance
Root
Bairstow (wk)
Stokes
Moeen
Dawson
Broad
Wood
Anderson

SA:

Elgar (c)
Kuhn
Amla
De Bruyn / Markram
Duminy
Bavuma
De Kock (wk)
Philander
Maharaj
Rabada
Morkel

The weather is set fair for the match - let's hope Lords can produce a good wicket for a change.

Both teams look a bit average. I'm going 2-2.

England will never have a better opportunity to beat South Africa in a series in England for the first time in my watching memory. As it is I think they'll **** it up.

Before my cricket watching time yeah. '99 was when I started to really take note. We were not a sporty family.

All change now though.

As someone in the Telegraph has written, SA look unusually vulnerable. 4th captain in 18 months, a good but not spectacular bowling line up and a soft batting line up.

Having said that, England's bowling is suspect too but there batting should be able to carry them. Cook, Root, Bairstow, Ali (if used correctly) and Stokes instill some confidence in me.

I think S.A. have the better bowling attack. The two team are remarkably similar

Rabada Wood SA
Anderson Philander SA
Morkel Broad Eng
Mahraj Dawson SA
Duminy Ali Eng
Morris or De Bruyn Stokes Eng batting Morris maybe edges bowling

Even batting wise
Elgar Cook Eng
Kuhn Jennings ?
Amla Root Eng unless Amla finds form
Bavuma Ballance Eng
De Kock Bairstow Eng

Every match up is very close and add Du Pleis for the next test may be makes S.A. overall favourites. The team that wins most match ups will come out on top.

I agree SAs bowling is better but a lot of it hinges on a 21 year old and in along, long series (having already been in England for months), it's a lot to ask. I'm not sure what Maharaj brings as he is very new to the international arena and what exactly does MOrkel have left?

In terms of batting, I think England are just far better. SA only truly top tier test batsman is Amla. Faf, Elgar...none of them are close to that. England have 2 and a higher quality of second tier batsmen.

But as is often the case, SA are good tourists and I wouldnt put it passed them to win a test or two.

Dawson FFS.

Isn't it interesting how both teams could be immeasurably improved by playing a certain Kevin Pietersen.

Not in the slightest. How could either team be improved by having an obnoxious 30 something a******* playing?

Rumours are that Roelof vanderwhatsisname was hoping for a call, any call, but was a bit surprised when it came from Amsterdam and not London or Cape Town.

Good to see Heino Kuhn get a chance. He's been there or thereabouts for years. Thought his time had passed.
