Too right and not just passť, but often inappropriate, almost as if some do not understand the meaning of the term.

Oh, I agree about Ballance, I thought it was absolute madness to bring him in when they did, and especially to do so by moving our most recently promising player down the order. But there were people -- and people on these forums -- who thought it was a rather good thing to do, and I suppose it might conceivably have worked out rather nicely, and then it would have looked like a brainwave. With Hales they didn't do that, so there's no way of knowing how well he might have done, and so we can pretend that he would have done better than Ballance, when in fact he might not have. In any case, one person's likely lad is another person's something else, and dropping Bopara (when some people would have stuck with him as their likely lad) only freed up one place.

As for favoured position, I think it's tough. You have to bat where you're told to. If all the best batsmen in the country are no. 3s then all but one of them have to bat out of position, if you want to put it like that. I would rather say that until one establishes a regular place in the England side one's international batting position is effectively in double figures, so any promotion into the team is a significant change in one's usual batting position. In any case by the time most players get around to being picked for England they have already batted in various positions and their position for their county will depend on how it worked out alongside their county team-mates, which is a very different question to the one that faces the England selectors.

A match winner. He must be close to overtaking Vaughan now.

With the England no.4 spot currently up for grabs, Oh Ravi Bopara scores 81* off 53 and only misses out on a century because he took 4-0-25-2 with the ball.

Kudos finding someone with less chance than kp of playing for England.

Think it's too late for Hildreth now. Quality county player though.

@SomersetCCC: James Hildreth needs 85 runs in the 2nd innings of this match to pass 1000 first class runs before the end of May! http://t.co/0s6VvNKEKR

He's only scored one Championship hundred!

16 wickets fell at Worcester today for 253 runs, but in amongst the carnage Scott Borthwick scored 103 before he was last man out in Durham's innings

Luke Wells top-scored for Sussex with 92.

Next top score was extras with 22.

Wells seems to make a habit of this and has carried his bat quite a few times. He needs to learn how to score the easy runs.

He would be considered as a batsman if he could not bowl. Sadly people will consider his bowling. Napier syndrome again.

For me he's been the player of the season so far. I can't understand why Ansari was selected ahead of him for the Ireland match. If Bell and Ballance continue to struggle he could be the next one in.

A good response to being dropped for a couple of matches. He's been Sussex's best spin bowler as well this season, though that's not saying a lot.

Borthwick's problem is playing at Chester-Le-Street and not bowling enough. He gets about 1.5 wickets per match in first class cricket, which is roughly half what Rashid has got over his career. If he wants an England career then I suggest he has to move.
