If we had batted on and got a lead of 400 plus, it would have given us half a session less to bowl them out.
I thought you were defending the slow progress of Cook et al earlier on. Nobody was talking about the subsequent speed with which England's innings was completed. I agree there would have been no point to batting on and on and losing time to bowl SA out.

What a brilliant performance by Ali and England in general. Can't wait for next Saturday at TB!

Useless Saffers. I'd been hoping for a session or two of cut-price final day Test cricket tomorrow.

But what a scintillating match. Looks like this year's Test programme could emulate the enthralling standards set by the domestic game. What a season!

Great win. Intriguing wicket. 4 days of full houses. Sunshine all the way. Get the co-op champers out.

Cook top scored in the second innings, so for me there is no defence necessary. If I had to, I would say it gave the pitch more time to bake and wear, it took the lead past 200, which was crucial. If Cook had taken more risks and got out earlier, England would likely have set a smaller target on a slightly less worn pitch.

And yes I'm glad the declaration was taken out of the equation.

So are Jock and DL.

Sir Virgs won't be seen again on this board as he'll have [word for self pleasured expunged] himself to death.

Didn't say it on here but had the median number of overs SA would face second innings at 70 having seen not much of the test (working this weekend) but caught some of Maharaj bowling yesterday evening. This was close to being a minefield by then and very much a game for getting your runs first innings.

Very uncharacteristic wicket for Lord's wasn't it? Rarely are spinners such a factor in tests at Headquarters.

A really worrying result for England that has papered over cracks (well Moeen Ali) that are just waiting to be exposed by better teams.

Weren't all our weaknesses rather obviously exposed during the winter?

Not sure if Zebs is taking the **** but I don't care if beating saffers papers over cracks, we haven't beaten them at home for nearly 20 years and they've cost us three captains.

And they still won't drop him with his mediocre beard, gifted wickets and lucky runs even though there are 20ish better batsmen better than him and at least one better spinner.

Until we stop hamstringing ourselves and drop the player that embodies the weaknesses that were so brutally and obviously exposed by India then we are doomed to continue our poor run in test cricket.

I absolutely endorse this sentiment...

BUT

This is the kind of short-term mediocre thinking that gets us stuck with journeymen bits and pieces players like Mo who isn't good enough in any discipline.
