What are people's thoughts on Varun Chopra? He has been very consistent since moving to Edgbaston and his century today is already the 2nd of this season. Toured with the Lions over the Winter, so obviously the selectors have an eye on him.

Watching him today he seems relatively techically sound- very strong straight down the ground and gets behind the line of the ball.

I think he is very good. I remember him standing out for the England Under 19s but it clearly took a long time to find his game. I don't think he would disgrace himself in Test cricket at all.

Looking at the scorecards three outstanding innings by young English batsmen: Luke Wells' double-hundred against the might of Surrey, Joe Root's match-winning knock v Durham and Jos Buttler's hundred against the champions.

Bowlers have been taking wickets too. Been a good start to the season for some talented young players.

Taylor 112
Compton 52 and 105*
Butler 119*
Hales 56

Woakes 3/78 & 2/50 and 21 & 42 batting at 6.
Overton 2/47 & 3/126
Briggs 2/13 & 3/38

Might have some chance of getting the sympathy Asian spot in the England team once Swann returns and Panesar's test career goes the way of those of Bopara, Afzaal, the Patels, et al.

Surely we pick someone averaging 75 with the bat and 21 with the ball to play nz don't we?

Maybe he has not improved enough because last year he averaged 72 with bat and 24 with ball.

I guess if he can consistently produce 100 opening the batting and 10 bowling straight through first up we should take a look at him batting at 8 and fourth change.

He's Alan's son. All 3 have double-hundreds for Sussex apparently, not many families have done that I don't think.

Given that Dernbach is an international and is bagging a few wickets, would it be too presumptuous to say that he is ahead of Tremlett in the test pecking order now?

Be interested to hear what Surrey fans think.

I very much doubt it. Tremlett is the best English bowler out there and if he ever got fit again would walk back into the side. I can't see Dernbach ever having what it takes to play Test cricket.

Onions has been impressive so far and would be worth playing in at least one of the tests with NZ.
