It's just stupid how consistently Australia has had a really very disproportionate number of the best ODI players in the world. At least in tests there's the odd non Antipodean allowed in there.

98 (NEW) - Read
Read was at about 96 in the rankings a month ago, so I don't think he could have dropped out of the top 100 earlier this summer.

Edit: Excerpt from ICC Test Batting rankings, as of August 13, 2007
Rank Player Team Rating
93 O.A. Shah ENG 234
93 Harbhajan Singh IND 234
95 Mushfiqur Rahim BAN 217
96 C.M.W. Read ENG 214

That link you have provided is for ODI Batting - I thought we were talking Tests?

Read's ratings: 250 - highest ever after the 4th Test vs Aus Dec 2006, ranking 93rd; 230 - after the 5th Test vs Aus Jan 2007, ranking 94th. His rating declined due to not being selected for England since then, to its current 214, ranking 98.

It looks like just being able to pronounce your name correctly gets you in the top 100 these days.

Sorry about that link.

I wonder if the Date Specific tool is that accurate. I picked a random date 11/6/07 where you had entered the rankings thread #142 when I was away also one I did #191 and compared it using the Date Specific tool and the differences are in bold. Read did not appear at the time of 3 Tests against India #194,#199,#209 but does when using that tool.

ICC Test Cricket Rankings at 11th June 2007

3 - Pietersen
14 - Cook
18 - Collingwood
19 - Bell
22 - Strauss
23 - Trescothick
28 - Flintoff
38 - Vaughan
76 - Prior - Boje
81 - Jones - Hall
89 - Giles - Kumble
99 - Shah - Hassan

ICC Cricket Test Rankings as at 3 July 2007
4 - Pietersen
14 - Collingwood
20 - Cook
21 - Bell
22 - Strauss
24 - Trescothick
29 - Flintoff
Was 38 - Vaughan (not on the rankings at present) 36
67 - Prior - Vaas
80 - Jones - Iqbal
84 - Giles - Rafiq
98 - Shah - Naved

There do seem to be anomalies in the date-specific rankings that come out of the on-line ICC tool. These seem to be beyond what would be expected due to players retiring (and dropping off the list), or being inactive in their test careers beyond the number of months where they are still registering, and being omitted. Also, if a player's rating score stays the same, someone else may have just played and dropped down the charts, thereby increasing the player in question's ranking.

So, it is a complex business to keep it all straight when, like you and I, one focuses on a subset of interest. Looking at the "current" list on June 11, for example, and once again on June 12, the data could change for the England players even if they have not finished a match, due to other test matches being completed.

Note: The ICC Rankings information is not published daily, even though the Rankings-date-specific information is available for any given date. This could account for minor differences.

One anomaly in the Test Rankings involves Ashley Giles. If you look at October 1, 2007, he is not listed at all - correctly so, I believe, since he has announced retirement. Yet, if you get date-specific rankings as of today's date, he shows as being in 85th place.

Having found out about the date specific ratings, which I hadn't quite appreciated before, I had a quick look at a few days before the latest ODI ratings were published. On 7th October, KP had slipped down to 7th, but by the time the full set wer published on 14th October he'd got that 63* and moved up to 4. Still a drop of two places, but not the 5 place drop of a few days before.

There aren't so many international cricketers that being in the top 100 means all that much.

That is true of the Test top 100. Of course, there are many more ODI cricketers because of the likes of Kenya, Canada, Zimbabwe, Scotland, Ireland and Bermuda being sanctioned to play matches they compete in as "ODIs".

Quite a few - a quick scan of the batting rankings found: Chigumbura, Taylor, Sibanda, ten Doescate, Tikolo, Ochoyo, Matsikenyeri, Mishra, Cann, Watson, Chibabha, Billcliffe, O'Brien (x2), Davison, Williams, Taibu, Reekers, Shah, Samad - approx 20 from the ICC affiliates in the top 100 of the ODI rankings.
(see the link to the odi rankings provided by FBU above)

Thanks for the tip MF - next time they haven't updated for a while I'll check out those date specific rankings.

Wow - for that brief instant in time (7 October) all of the top 5 ODI batsmen were Aussies!
