Cummins would be odds on to replace Johnson some time this series. Hasn’t been all too effective recently due to declining pace. We’ll see what happens on a decent pitch, but he hasn’t got too much left in him.

Why would anyone walk? You know that bowlers and fielders will appeal even though they know they're cheating so why should a batsman be expected to follow a different code?

Furthermore, skies clear and nothing in the pitch. A glorious batting day today. England will be seeking to use up as many of the available overs as they can, because it will be a party for batsmen out there today.

And I fully expect tomorrow to be a batting day too. From an Aussie perspective it wasn't a bad toss to lose, you get the best bowling overs and the best betting ones too.

Lol. Watching it on iPad at work (road to hell but still) and it was obvious it was grounded. No idea why Bumble called it out. Certainly looked like cheating to me.

Living very dangerously this morning, with Ali especially looking very flashy but not unreasonable with the tail. Scoring very fast though so this has already taken things away a bit.

It was a great toss to lose. Very few captains have the courage to field first because of the lashing you'll get if it doesn't come off. So you get the result you should be wanting, while taking none of the responsibility.

That being said, the Australian players still have to make the most of them. Theoretically it will be a great batting day, but Watson is a hack, and Warner's an idiot.

Spin looking important.

I started raising question marks over Johnson quite a few months ago, but this test is sealing the deal for me. He's lost too much pace to be a certain starter in the Australian line up.

It's possible he wouldn't have been had Harris been available but all rather speculative now and I think he'd probably have played whatever. This is a rubbish surface for him though, in his defence, and I think his figures don't flatter him.

I'm always reluctant to accept "you know whether you've caught it or not", I'll give Voges the benefit of the doubt with him being mid-dive and about to clatter into Broad that he didn't realise he was dragging the ball on the ground. But I can't see how Voges could be so certain that he didn't ground it.

Leave the slog-sweep to the pivotal batsmen, Stuart...

Still wishing we had Rashid. Rashid for Bell looking saner every minute..

I don't think he's looked that poor on an anti-Mitch-pitch, and he's not had the luck the other bowlers have.

And also how confident Erasmus was in giving it out, i assume the 3rd umpire said something in his ear to get it looked at again

He's bowled a lot of short or over-pitched stuff, as he often does. Sometimes he gets away with it.

Why should we prepare a pitch that suits Australian bowlers? That's for your groundsmen to do, not ours. There seems to be a real feeling that England are doing something wrong here, they're not. That said, I'd like to see a little more life, but not much!!

I thought he conferred with the other umpire and couldn't see a reason not to. It was only replay that it was obviously grounded.

Not sure who suggested England should. But it could be a boring few days if England bowlers don't get anything out of it either. The last day or so was only made interesting by England batsmen being generous.

Moeen is easily good enough to bat top 5. He's fantastic in full flow. I think this is the kind of pitch where he will be dangerous with the ball as it's turning from straight, where if he bowls a bit of filth then throw in a few absolute beauties then he could do some damage.

Echoes of a reverse in fortunes from the last Ashes. Harris retiring on the eve of the series, Haddin dropping a clanger that has probably cost the Aussies 250 in total, key player Johnson being nullified, the England lower order demoralising them further. Just need Jimmy and Broad to show up with the ball.

Shall we see after we've bowled? Moeen has done very well with the bat and there's no law against him being good with the ball. I like Rashid but I think he's a player who keeps improving the longer he's around the squad but not in the team. My suspicion is that he would not prove a consistently effective test bowler (although I also think it's a real shame that he didn't get a go in the Caribbean).

The Ali fun is over, sadly. Good innings but didn't ever really look like he was in for a long time rather than a good time this morning. Not complaining or anything. Would be nice if the final pair could thrash a few more.

Which is the key point. Don't know is fine but don't pretend you do know when you obviously don't.

A shame for Moeen but an invaluable innings for his country. Brainless shot from Broad earlier - really poor cricket.

I'll take that. 430. Moeen looked confident..more than useful runs. And well done Starc-ers.
