Baaaaaaaaaaaaaah! You may have a point there. I understand there are a lot of sheep in Australia. Just not as bloody wet.

I said we should have played Rashid instead of Bell and nobody listened.

Funny sort of morning that. Three wickets frittered away, but a quick scoring rate thanks to Joe Root counter-attacking so successfully. Bell wasn't up to the challenge. Again. If we are going to persist with him, dropping him lower is the only real alternative.

I would agree with the assessment of the overdone pomp and circumstance. That ought to have begun earlier rather than truncate the playing session by a quarter of an hour.

As long as they don't move Root from 5, I don't care.

Hazelwood has been fairly tight but ought not to have been terribly threatening to batsmen playing straight. Starc and Johnson have both been mixed. Lyon has just been his usual self. Certainly not impressive to be 3 down. Root seems to be making a bit of being dropped though. Suspect we may need over 400 to remain much in the game if the Aussie batsmen put this start into perspective.

Root's runs of course don't count to his average batting at no.5, as he was dropped.

Well done, Joe! He has been the perfect partner for Ballance here, taking the run scoring pressure off while he has gained back some confidence. Now we just need to accumulate and do nothing stupid for the rest of this session.

Ballance is really struggling to cope with MJ bowling short from around the wicket. It's a bit of a worry considering how slow the pitch is.

Ballance is scoring ugly runs. Does he look convincing? No. Does he look like he believes he belongs out there? Not for me. Not even trying to score off Lyon.

Close one that from Root. I think that was a pretty good referral from Steve Smith.

That looked close to me before they had pitch map.

Ballance looks all at sea. I really hope he gets a ton to shut us doubters up.

That was a close call, and Joe Root definitely seems to be having luck going his way. Of course, he's batted wonderfully well as well.

Depends if the Aussie batsmen give a few away. Two of the three so far were down to poor batting.

It's a poor pitch (so far) and I hope they are criticised for it.

I'm not sticking up for the pitch, but Boycott was saying it's a nice way to start the summer against Mitchell Johnson, to banish any demons. No maidens or wickets for him as yet.

50 for Ballance. And boy has Starc bowled absolute rubbish today. (now watch him take five or six).
