Ali would be a decent second spinner, if England had a decent first choice spinner. He might be the more "impact bowler" who might not have to bowl quite so many overs. He does give the ball a rag but he isn't accurate enough and it is a disappointment that in over 18 months his control hasn't markedly improved.

On to the game it has been a good start from both, particularly Cook. However given that this is England you can never overlook the possibility of the collapse..........

Surely even England can get a draw on this pitch?

I'm just worried about the "apres la deluge" aspect. If one of these two get out, a scrambled Bell might come and go in the blink of a (poet's) eye and then if they get down to the axis of Bairstow, Stokes and Buttler it could be somewhat awkward especially if the pitch takes a bit more turn. That said it just looks too dead at the moment.

Century opening partnership!!! It's been a long time. Cook in particular is looking very comfortable.

Jinxing stuff.

Putting Pakistan's performance in perspective though - those two dropped catches and the no ball wicket look even more crucial now.

What book? Thought it came out about a year ago. I see Fred has another didn't realise KP did too.

Last years one was about his petted lip - this one is about his magnificent cricket career on the pitch.

Increased his batting average.

Remember the new regime were going to let players play their natural brand of attacking cricket.

Bell nearly out first ball - that could have been fatal.

Looks a different game since the wicket. Bell looks over the place and even Cook looks less assured.

Bell is an absolute joke. Here is a man with over 100 tests under his belt and he still looks like an absolute novice. It's time for England to move on.

Hmmm. We're going to have to bat until tea on the final day at this rate! Cook found a way of scoring relatively freely but Moeen seemed to be scared to play shots. I suppose that's what happens when you give someone a role they aren't used to doing.

Bell looks less and less like an International cricketer every time you see him, a man with 116 caps you say? Never. Looks like a novice, not at all assured like a man with 11 years of Test cricket behind him should.
