2nd Test - Pakistan v England Dubai October 22-26

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cri...-Joe-Root.html

With the 2nd test upon us I have decided to start the match thread so any discussion about the lead up and likely teams/adjustments can be discussed here. Here is Boycott's take on it. I think he's largely stating the obvious above in that link. I'd be surprised if there is any change to the England side and I note that it is less clear cut whether Azhar Ali will return to the Pakistan side. However I note that Yasir Shah will be back and there is a general feeling that the pitch shouldn't be quite the featherbed Abu Dhabi clearly was.

Fire away folks.

Doom. Cook out early after we decide to bat first and we struggle to make 250. Then the pile on and finally...

Big call over Butler. Giving Bairstow the gloves would open up the option of playing Patel (with his additional "spin" option) or Taylor, both of whom have a reputation of being good players of spin. Not sure which way I would go, but the option of a batsman who has just enjoyed the type of FC season as Bairstow coming in at 7 is attractive.

Stokes has a stomach bug so Patel may play. I would bring in Taylor.

Taylor for whom? I don't think giving Bairstow the gloves would be wise. He needs to concentrate on his batting.

Tayor for Stokes, if he couldn't play. You would still have 5 bowlers.

I share reservations about both Bairstow and Buttler regarding their batting and I have to be honest I'm not sure what is gained by giving the former the gloves England dispense with the latter. I have little real belief that Patel adds much with the bat either. What he may be able to do is give you 10-12 overs with the ball that don't cost too much. However he got easily dealt with by India the last time he played test cricket.

Our batting should be strong enough to weaken it slightly and our pace bowling could do with a bit of strengthening. Plunkett for Stokes, if he is unable to play, seems to be the obvious choice.

I agree about the keepers, as neither of them are great with the gloves I'd pick the best batsman. I actually believe on the sub-continent/WI wickets you would gain more by picking your very best pure keeper irrespective of their batting, but that ship has sailed!
IMO as a seventh choice bowler in an attack Patel adds no more than Root.
Given the options they have I would, probably, give Bairstow the gloves and bat Taylor at 5.

I think Patel may be a better bowler than Ali. He's played as the sole spinner in his county side for years.

On the keeper business, I think picking the best wicketkeeper for his keeping alone would have yielded more runs from the keeper's bat this year than the current policy has done!
Tolerating a keeper who doesn't contribute with the bat is seemingly only possible when he is picked for his batting.

Prior is turning out be just as tough to replace as Swann has been. I still think I'd stick with Buttler over Bairstow. It's a shame they didn't call up Footitt rather than Jordan as I'd have fancied him over Wood. Otherwise I think I'd go for the same team if Stokes is fit.

Since prior left we have demolished India, drew in West Indies (losing a math where keeper top scorer) drew vs NZ (lost match where keeper top scorer) and won the ashes.

Stokes not 100% fit but plays anyway. England could do with a golden morning from Anderson and Broad.
