I would like to bid farewell to a fantastic player. Always entertaining to watch when dismantling attacks, a true professional with drive and passion, and someone who should be commended for his work for breast cancer and promotion of Aboriginal cricket.

Quite over the top indeed. Out of Hayden's 30 centuries, only two were really against top class pace attacks (Sharjah 2002 vs Waqar and Shoaib and The Oval 2005. He scored a century against Pollock and Donald in 2001, but that was one of Donald's last matches amidst a series of injuries).

Compare that to for example Gooch: 19 centuries, the first three against Roberts/Holding/Garner/Croft, 2 more against Marshall/Ambrose/Walsh/Patterson and another one against Wasim/Waqar.

Or even to Atherton: 16 centuries, 3 against Ambrose/Walsh and 3 against Donald/Pollock (and that 98 not out)

So why weren't countless other batsmen scoring centuries at will then?

I'd back that, only pity he outstayed his welcome in the Aussie team over the last twelve months.

a great batsman - the flat track bully tag surely does not apply to someone with so many centuries surely (a fine one-day player as well) - Hick is the flat-track bully!

agree he may not be one of the nicest chaps going - but being nice doesnt win much

Maybe, but to be fair, he'd definately earned that privilege.

He seemed to be very happy on the countless times he put England attack to the sword on the numerous times he helped win the Ashes.

The number of centuries scored doesn't make him "The Greatest Opening Batsman Evah" (besides that Gavaskar scored more centuries anyway). The lack of centuries against pairs of opening bowlers that can be classified as amongst some of the best ever definitely prevents him from being classed as a great, specially as other opening batsmen with considerable lesser statistics did manage to score centuries against those top attacks.

If Hayden was born 10 years earlier, he wouldn't have played half as many matches as he has played now.

No it was a front. He cried buckets all the way back home.

The man is one of the all time greatest batsmen ever. His record will stand the test of time, be that runs, hundreds, average, highest score. I was unaware of his deep depression after Ashes wins though, he must have been happy in 2005.

Your last sentence of nonsensical whimsy does highlight where your state of mind is at though, and also that you do seem a rabid anti Australian for no reason.

If Bradman had been born 10 days later, he would have ended up with a test average of 3, and if Flintoff had been born 3 seconds later, he would have more than that an embarassing 2 test fivefers

im with you Henry on this one - cant really see the point or merit at sneering at someones record, which by any eras standard is so impressive - probably not best opener of all time, but amongst the top few i reckon

He wasn't miserable at Wantage Road. Quite the opposite in fact.

I believe cricket supporters from other countries are not really best placed to judge cricketing retirees, especially those that have been a nemesis, as they will have only witnessed a fraction of their careers first hand.

The bloke was a legend. As I said earlier, Australia will be weaker without him.

not sure thats true - its often other teams supporters who see the true value of a player which their own supporters cant see - i also think to be respected or feared by your opponents is the ultimate acolayde
