Never been a fan of the bloke as a player though I do admire his boundary riding skills which are something else, especially for a bloke who carries more timber than he should. Pathetic that he stooped to that.

Did anyone hear Lara's "Spirit of Cricket" lecture played on TMS at lunch time?

He didn't mince his words about the absence of such a spirit by West Indies during their period of dominance - allegations of biased umpiring, time-wasting, various tricks employed by revered former players. He also had a go at the WICB's record over the years.

From what i've read didnt he refer to the time wasting and the seven overs bowled in an hour when England were chasing victory during one of the tests on the 89/90 tour?

Team of greats they may have been but that was downright cheating and fair play to Lara for highlighting it.

I also read that Holding responded that he never appreciated the way Lara played. Obviously a quality bowler but clearly no judge of quality himself if he cant appreciate Lara as player. Rather ignorant and petty if truth be told.

Yes, he did refer to that particular game where England were chasing a small total. The clear-up operation after rain was dragged out as long as possible. When play resumed, Lara himself, as 12th man, was continually going out with gloves, drinks, pain killers etc to slow things down, and as you say only 7 overs were bowled in one of the two hours available for England to chase the target. (He didn't mention the actual figure).

Holding was one of the players Lara referred to as not playing within the spirit of cricket, impeding the batsmen running being one example.

I'm not sure how his speech will have gone down with WI players and board, but his own adherence to the spirit of cricket, specifically as a batsman - always a walker- reinforces my high opinion of one of my all-time heroes.

I think I read somewhere that after the disastrous tour to Australia in the mid-seventies, they decided that as a team they couldn't appear timid and let themselves be bullied. Also a lot to do with establishing racial/national identity after colonialism. Their approach may not always have been pretty, and they got plenty of criticism, but they forced other sides to respect them.

Teams both weak and strong have pushed the boundaries of the law to win and will keep doing so. It might not be a great look and may give the likes of Lara the opportunity to ride the high horse but it is what it is.

To me, Lara sounds like a bit of a self-apologist. And to name and shame individuals who he doesn't particularly like in a so-called "Spirit of Cricket" speech doesn't suggest he quite holds himself to the high standards that he seems to expect from others.

I really doubt Holding was referring to the quality of Lara's cover drives, rather Lara's inconsistent and tempestuous personality while in a leadership role in WI cricket in the 90s.

Holding's quote:

“Brian Lara can say whatever he likes and I will not listen. I was never a Brian Lara fan and I never appreciated the way he played."

Very good post on the matter.

Lara is the same guy who refused to play for the Windies until he was paid what he wanted AND through tantrums as captain numerous times. I dunno how he holds himself to such a high standard.

Plus, why bring up something 30+ years ago and yet negate to bring up much about the Aussies in his own time, who imo, with their constant verbal abuse were much worse.

It's rare that you come across cricket fans from the 80s hating the windies but it is pretty common for us growing up with the aussies to hate them, regardless of where the fan is from.

I think that says a lot.

ANyway, I believe the award and speech should be about current matters and be a way to improve cricket matters now, not to drag up old animosities. One of the best was Sanga and his crtique of how the sl cricket board is destroying the game, a few years later, they are at their lowest ebb. Very poignant stuff.

I like this

Four new development contracts can also be offered to players in the red-ball and white-ball categories. These contracts cater to those players yet to establish themselves in the XI but who are likely to be selected in the year ahead.

All-format contracts - Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Devendra Bishoo

Red-ball contracts - Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Jermaine Blackwood, Miguel Cummins, Jomel Warrican (Development - Shimron Hetmyer, Kieran Powell, Vishaul Singh)

White-ball contracts - Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse, Jason Mohammed, Evin Lewis, Rovman Powell
(Development - Kesrick Williams)
