In seriousness, Ali has been pretty terrible with the ball this season so far which has to bring his continued selection for england as an all rounder into doubt.

He isn't much improved since his debut really. In fact that Durban test apart, I'd say he's regressed.
Ali will be in the Test side no matter how he performs early season, but the way in which he has been treated with such contempt by Division Two batsmen doesn't bode well.

He didn't get much respect from the Sri Lankans in 2014.

Worrying times for England fans.

Good list. Looks like a bunch of bowlers failing to make any impact suggesting they should replace the incumbent.

Ansari has far and away the best average of any spinner at the moment:

Ansari 28
Rashid 34.43
Patel 43.33

Not sure how effective averages and wickets are in judging a player in county cricket because of the differences in the pitches is so big.

This year's top 3 so far:

Alex Thomson 9 @24.55
Jack Taylor 7 @32.00
Will Durston 7 @41.57

It's Wes? ... And I think one of those wickets was in a non-first-class match.
Thomson's playing for Cardiff MCCU but this is his third year, so probably he'll take up something sensible starting in the autumn.

If 2014 is relevant then we should rejoice. He tied India in knots.

If only we were playing India this summer.

Looks like Ansari has injured his hand again - so he could be safe for another series.

Sorry, it is Wes and that was my fault, but those figures were taken from cricinfo's 2016 first class in England stats and I wouldn't go picking a fight with them on stats.

Shame that even one of spin bowling greatest proponents doesn't consider spin bowling a sensible career option .

So the best three spin bowlers in the country are a uni student, a Gloucester all rounder, and a Debryshire batsman.

Yes. We've got 5+ good seamers though.

I doubt it. The difference between the two divisions is probably relevant here. As is the sample size. And in any case, it is well known that Ali is the best available spinner, and yet his figures this season are awful. So the figures must be misrepresenting the situation.

Briggs has done a decent holding role so far, going at less than 3 an over but only 5 wickets at 57.

Just when I thought that Samit would never be picked by England again he's in the bowling and batting form of his life. To be honest, he's always quite economical and for me, a better batsman than Moeen, so I've never minded his name being mentioned.

I thought Kerrigan might have a big season this year. He's clearly the best spinner in the county championship. Will he ever get over the oval?

No reason why Kerrigan wouldn't. People place too much emphasis on one off nightmare performances. I would pick Kerrigan without blinking especially as the batsman/spinner strategy is failing.

I don't see how he can at present. All the signs -- beginning with Cook's non-use of him in the second half of the game -- say that the powers that be think he represented his bowling abilities accurately in that test match and that he's not good enough. Basically, the selectors need to get over it first, because Kerrigan's either already over it, or he'll only get over it when he plays test match cricket again with greater support and success.
