Last place in the team now seems to be between Curran and Moeen.

Crane, the 20-year-old leg-spinner, is set to come into the team in place of either Moeen Ali or Tom Curran as England take the opportunity to blood a new player with the series already decided and the whitewash averted.
Hopefully not just a token Test to finish the series. I'd be very surprised if he is ready for the step up, and he'd need a captain who is patient and want to use him even if he is expensive. Good luck to him.

Rashid won't play red ball for Yorkshire and crane doesn't play every game for Hants. Looking forward to people championing them both for the test side.

I was shocked that Rashid will no longer be playing red ball cricket for Yorkshire. As a bowler you want to be bowling at every opportunity. Is Buttler the next to give up red ball cricket and join Morgan and Rashid.

Rashid opting not to play is a million miles different from Crane not being selected last season for Hamps.

Unless you have turnips for brains.

I don't think anyone on here has ever championed Crane for the test side, except in the context of the last Ashes series where because of the ludicrous squad selected, he and a palpably useless Moeen Ali were the only two spin-bowling options in the squad (apart from Root, Malan, etc.).

Mason Crane is 20 years old...

Yeah it's pretty shocking, it would make more sense if he was getting lots of big T20 contracts but he's not.

It's the future. Something drastic has to happen to save test and first class cricket, we can't continue along the current path as players will opt where the money and excitement is.

Good on him for his honesty.

To be fair he probably wasn't getting back in the test team.

In 2017 England played 7 T20s. Rashid played 4 matches of which one game he was selected and didn't bowl.

2017 ODIs and T20

132.2 overs for England
110.0 overs for Yorks
4.0 overs BPL

13 caps, 0 in England.

Top wicket taker in India then dropped.

Suspect he feels a bit messed around.

Yep. Especially when he saw the filth Moeen bowled in the Ashes. Crane wasnt a lot better but it was his debut.

I was talking about domestic T20 tournaments, what's he going to do when he would have been playing 4 day cricket for Yorkshire?

I read that he'd be £70k out of pocket too. It does seem strange though he says it's until the autumn. Perhaps there are underlying issues we don't know about.

Well there were reports around October time that I heard saying he wasn’t comfortable bowling with the red ball at all. Given even if he were torediscover form he probably doesn’t hold much hope of a test recall maybe he thinks the singular focus will help him develop his limited overs game more. Quite a brave call without the T20 contracts lined up to pay his way.

You are comparing 5 tests of filth from someone with 50caps to a 20yo’s debut ?

Rashid's batting is clearly not the reason he gets into the England ODI and T20 sides but he is a very useful player coming in down the order. Making himself unavailable for FC cricket will mean he gets little or no batting practice in the middle.

Since Rashid was last picked for tests, Moeen has proved that he's never going to be a reliable test spinner, Crane has proved unable to compete against even an utterly broken Moeen, and Dawson has been jettisoned. I would have thought that Rashid's test prospects should be much better than they were at the time he was dropped. Barring a senseless extension of Moeen's test career, Rashid's only real competition would seemingly be Leach.
