I see England's best limited overs bowler, bowling on a 300+ pitch, has figures of 6-0-13-1.
Ravi Bopara is not England's best limited overs bowler. He is not their bowler at all. He doesn't play for England. He hasn't done for years, he never will again, and opinions may differ about whether he should ever have done so in the first place. So: wrong thread. Your post belongs on the domestic forum.

Failures for Jennings (allowed one, I think), Hameed and Livingstone so far today.

Meanwhile Ian Jonathan Leonard Trott closes in on his third century of the season (plus a pretty little 92).

Jennings back in the runs today I see.

Got to love his Gooch-like appetite for runs.

I think about this time last year his FC average, from a pretty sizeable sample, was below 30 or thereabouts. Currently over 37. Dunno about his List A record but whatever it was it's certainly a damn sight higher now.

Have to be encouraged by the way Cook has thrown himself back into County cricket - 337 runs at 67 in FC, plus 503 runs at 71 in 50 over stuff

Augers well for his Test future

Cook/Jennings looks nailed on for the test opening partnership.

Hameed needs runs if he wants in.

Maybe although he's always scored plenty of runs in his short stints back at Chelmsford over the years. He's a class batsman so you'd expect him to make bog standard county attacks struggle. The questions have to be whether his mind will be clearer now he's relieved of the captaincy and whether he still has the hunger to play for another 3-5 years. He certainly has the talent

Lancs 17/2 on a pitch where Middlesex were skittled out for 180.

Hameed 6*

Huge, huge innings this for him.

Indeed it is compared to some of his recent efforts. He is having a shocking season.

Averaging 15 this season after 6 matches and has yet to pass 50

Hard to see him being picked unless he gets at least one hundred in his next three innings - the second innings here and then the match v Hants at Old Trafford (I'm assuming here the squad will be picked before Lancs' match against Warwickshire).

I'm sure his time will come again though.

Another cheap fivefer for Jofra Archer. Has anyone confirmed when he qualifies?

I didn't realise he is 6'4.
Today he gets his 3rd 5fer in 12 f/c games. I would have him opening with
Philander instead of Jordan.

98* for Ballance.

Admittedly it was only against Somerset but he's averaging 103.85 this season.

If he's not good enough for test cricket is the county championship good enough?

At the last several attempts he was not good enough for test cricket. More recently he didn't seem to be good enough for Bayliss and Cook, who preferred the reserve wicketkeeper as a specialist batsman. There's usually a bunch of ex-test players making runs for fun in the CC -- and indeed, that helps to keep the CC good enough. The question that really needs asking is whether or not Ballance is yet as good a CC batsman as Chris Read.

There's making runs and there's averaging over 100.

He is but cricket has plenty of examples of players who find the transition up to test level impossible ---- and some with relatively average first class records who make the transition easily.

In his last 11 tests he averages 18, after 10 tests he averaged 68. He is worth another look at some point but his record so far is he's done fantastically well against teams with weak bowling attacks and fantastically badly against teams with strong bowling attacks. For someone who goes back and across the wicket in his trigger movements as far as he does he seems to get bowled an awful lot in test cricket. I'd imagine he's well over the average. Watching him bat you'd have thought it was almost impossible to hit the wicket with the pads where they end up.
