Should imagine big Dan will be moving back up the rankings after this test.

Interesting thing about the Top 10 batsmen is that there's only one opener in there (not counting Dravid) - are we at an all-time low in terms of the standards in openers?

We're at a low in terms of the standards of test cricket tbh.

A 20 or 30 year low I suspect, not an all-time low.

I think around the late 1990s, early 2000s was probably the golden era of test cricket. Australia, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand were probably at their all time strongest. South Africa probably had their second best ever side whilst England were improving, West Indies hadn't yet totally collapsed and we were awash with all time greats like Lara, Murali and McGrath. I feel fortunate to have been a cricket supporter around that time.

Any of the best cricketers, if they were to say "I'll open" as opportune, could. As we know, when innings start, an early wicket can fall.

Spot on. That sounded like an excellent era, too young to recall but I have seen videos on youtube etc. As you say, those all time greats. Even Zimbabwe had some competitiveness- i.e. winning in Pakistan and Andy Flower also in the team, before the Mugabe caused defections.

ICC cricket ranking is good thing to identify those player who are all time great in the season. ICC can identify those cricketer and give them number. At the end of year when ceremony function is done then this number help them to find one best cricketer in that era for particular period for giving award.

Didn't realise that Bell was so high up the test rankings but fair play, that reflects that he's probably only behind Kallis in terms of average in the last two years of test cricket (Dec 2009).
