Bairstow is the better bat but swap them around by all means. This is simply a collection of the 11 best players across the 5 tests.
Don't think you can leave out Philander, who had the best batting and bowling averages for SA. Sure, he didn't do much in the fourth and fifth tests but then nobody really emerged from the fifth with any credit.

They may as well not have turned up for the fifth test.

I must admit I was amused to see that post from slogger. He'll be horrified at his error!

I think with Ali as low down as 8 (and obviously in the XI), TRJ was a better ift but again, not fussed if someone picks Philander. Even ill/injured, he bowled really good.

The error in not making the joke more obvious for the obtuse?

Next week, oh and West Indies are standing in for them

On a serious note, have England *fingers crossed* abandoned the whole cross format series points nonsense on a permanent basis or is it just series by series? A few young kids might buy into it, and it work for women if they don't play long enough series in any format, but it struck me as completely pointless which is ironic..........

I think the point system is a good idea if they promote it accordingly and provide context. Last year with the Pak series, the commentators barely mentioned it and when they did, they did so reluctantly, especially Gower's sarcastic delivery (he needs to go but thats a separate discussion).

If they put the points system in place, properly explained it at the start of the series and only gave out one trophy, which would go to the team with the most points overall across formats, I think it's a great idea. However, if they keep separate trophies and awards for tests and ODIs then I see no point/

All of this would help add context to ODI cricket which just sits there, a tthe end of a test series, waiting to be over so teams can go home. If not then at least bring back the triangular series.

The points system would also add context to 2-test series, followed up by LOIs.

Forgot about those 2 test series. Points would fit perfectly for it.
