CWOTV were disparaging about the squad selection. However, it's not clear to me what a better alternative might look like and they didn't seem to want to suggest one.

stopped watching CWOTV a while back but just looking at the squad, can someone from the selection panel/coaching staff/captaincy explain what Dawson and Jones are doing in there above Rashid and Plunkett?

I think the best team to be made from the squad is probably:

Cook
Jennings
Root c
Bairstow wk
Ballance
Ali
Stokes
Broad
Jones
Wood
Anderson

I guess they feel Rashid is just not good enough so they've moved on. Tough on him, as he appeared to have progressed in Asia but he's not really impressed in the ODIs or first class this year. Dawson offers some control at least.

Plunkett has all but retired from the longer format, so don't think he was ever in the running.

I would say he's been very impressive in ODIs this season, destroying Ireland and then taking more wickets than anyone but Plunkett in the Champions Trophy, with a better average and economy rate, despite having been weirdly dropped for one game. I think you're right to say that Dawson offers better control, but the selection of Ali in recent years suggests that hasn't been a priority, and I wonder if Rashid has fallen out with someone important behind the scenes. In any case, the selection of a spinner other than Ali is definitely progress.

Which Jones are you picking: Simon, Geraint or Dean?

Found myself doing a double-take when I read "Jones" also.

I've always thought that Rashid is viewed in the same way as Tredwell was - ie the selectors tolerate his presence in the side for as long as they can't find a "better" alternative. It might be that he finds himself permanently out of the limited over sides before long too.

On the flip side, it might be that England plan to only play one spinner at Lords, in a support role for the seamers, and see Dawson more as the direct replacement for Moeen.

He might well have meant Corporal.

I had the same thought. Is that Roland-Jones?

Dawson? Hah! County pieman. If you pick him you have to drop Moeen.

I've made up my mind.

Cook
Jennings
Ballance
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Wood
Broad
Anderson

Just don't get Adil to carry the drinks 'cos he's better than that.

Alternatively you could put Rashid in and drop Mo.

Or play them both and leave Buttler out.

No, you could -- and I think they surely will -- play both. Moeen more or less fits the description "county pieman" with the ball but scored a hundred in our last test. That was Dawson's first test: he outbowled Moeen and plays as the spinner while Moeen plays as a batsman. Rashid and Buttler aren't in the squad.

Well, neither Buttler nor Rashid are in the squad so your suggestion is somewhat hypothetical.

If Rashid doesn't play another test he will have 10 caps - ZERO in England.

Think the selection of Dawson indicates Moeen will bat at 5 and the pretence he is a serious test bowler has been finally put to rest. They've tried to shoehorn him in as a front line spin bowler, all rounder and even opener - if this doesn't work out then perhaps he could keep ?

He isn't alone in terms of English spin bowlers if that does happen.
