Anyone else concerned that we haven't got enough bowlers? I guess we have Jennings and Ballance to chip in with 10-15 overs a day but would've preferred another front line option.

Good weather. With recent sunshine may bat first for once. Usually flattens out after day 2 but may be a batting wicket from the gun? Predict an England win.

I think S.A. have the better bowling attack. The two team are remarkably similar

Rabada Wood SA
Anderson Philander SA
Morkel Broad Eng
Mahraj Dawson SA
Duminy Ali Eng
Morris or De Bruyn Stokes Eng batting Morris maybe edges bowling

Even batting wise
Elgar Cook Eng
Kuhn Jennings ?
Amla Root Eng unless Amla finds form
Bavuma Ballance Eng
De Kock Bairstow Eng

Every match up is very close and add Du Pleis for the next test may be makes S.A. overall favourites. The team that wins most match ups will come out on top.

Genuinely unsure if this is being played for laughs given the three bowlers, stokes, Dawson and Ali.

Selecting 3 all rounders instead of a 4th front line option does bring to mind the wise words of one otherwise bonkers consultant anaesthetist - "two 6 foot ladders won't necessarily help you get up a twelve foot wall"

Can't see England going with 5 seamers so it looks like RoJo will be carrying the drinks. The odds on SA winning seem quite generous @ 5-2. England evens. (Draw 11-4). At Lords? Hmmmm. Think both captains will bat if given the choice, although it is rather humid and close in Beds. Cricinfo names the entire SA squad but that includes Faf. I'm really looking forward to this one. Real cricket at last.

I thought he was a keeper, so I was a bit surprised to see him opening on this tour.

I think both teams have big holes in but enough quality players to make it a good series, assuming the quality players perform and stay fit.

I agree SAs bowling is better but a lot of it hinges on a 21 year old and in along, long series (having already been in England for months), it's a lot to ask. I'm not sure what Maharaj brings as he is very new to the international arena and what exactly does MOrkel have left?

In terms of batting, I think England are just far better. SA only truly top tier test batsman is Amla. Faf, Elgar...none of them are close to that. England have 2 and a higher quality of second tier batsmen.

But as is often the case, SA are good tourists and I wouldnt put it passed them to win a test or two.

We've come unstuck many times recently by going for quantity over quality - the old "one of them will come off" approach.

Lets see - def a good toss to win.

If we don't take enough wickets we might ask why we dropped the bowler who took the most (23) wickets in the last series played..

The assumption in this being a flawed plan is that there is a quality fourth bowler to pick instead, when there might not be. Agree re toss, let's hope Root has beginner's luck!

England win toss and bat. England bowlers pace out their run ups? Wish I was there.

What a useless shot to get out to. Scoring tons of runs against County attacks means nothing if you give your wicket away like that when you're at Lord's.

Argh. One more catch to De Kock, I think he's got something mad like 80 dismissals from 20 innings, he must be a candidate for fastest to 100 when he gets there (hopefully not in this series!).
