Root should just open as it's clear the cricketing gods/England's inept batting are determined to get him in facing the new ball no matter what positions he plays in.

Seriously bad miss by the SA 12th man. Might get away with it, but if Root gets 100......?

Familiar dismissal for Ballance.

Shocking use if reviews by Ballance obviously didn't want to waste one on Jennings so he could waste them all on himself. Not any clear reason to even think that was worth a review.

Maybe we should play him at 7 then.

Lol. Jennings doesn't review when it's not out and Ballance reviews when he's plumb in front.

He has done nothing to alter his technique. The same dismissals will happen over and over again. So it appears we're going to continue to select him. Wonder when he'll next be dropped and then selected again? Mitchell Starc will have a field day against him in the Ashes.

Top 3 gone for under 50. First test of the summer. Lords. Two Yorkshiremen at the crease. Anybody else get a sense of deja vu?

South Africa seem to like watching Root bat. Should have caught that.

Don't they always lose 3 early cheap wickets?

I was sort of agreeing with you tbh Ali. As I type, Bairstow flashes at a wide one, Root has been dropped twice and these are England's most reliable batsmen. Stokes, Ali, Dawson, all brilliant on their day, but "reliable" is not a word I would use.

It was all a bit strange Jennings didn't look like a man who thought he was out. Wandered down, has a prod roughly where the ball pitched looking like he would review. Then a very long conference, then wanders off. It never looked out. Would love to know what they discussed for all that time.

Philander bowling well but Bairstow's footwork has been nowhere.

El Trombone for 4. 76. Bairstow done by a confident Philander.
