Good thing to have a proper batsman such as Mo walk out at 5 down, given that getting 5 down relatively early in the innings seems unavoidable for this team.

Awesome effort by the captain to lead from the front like this, even if he must have a lucky horseshoe and a four-leaf clover in his back pocket. 320 looked miles away at drinks in the morning session.

Talking Statto?

OK. What is the highest score a new England captain has got on debut? Root may get that one?

What a ball to get Root out on 149 - but he overstepped - what a muppet

Well played skip - top drawer batting.

Flat deck now though - need 450.

Update to the captains scoring a ton in their first match with the duties; Cook scored 173 vs Bangladesh at Chittagong in March 2010.

Hope Joe is not using up a series' worth of luck here. Great support from Stokes and now Mo (who totally should be dropped by the way) too. The less said about the cluster**** of the top order the better.

A day of two halves. Brilliant from Root, fair enough he has had some luck but he's a class act and done it under huge pressure. Can't ask for anything more.

Root currently on 183* is now England's top-scoring batsman in debut game as captain.

Captains of other teams have been mentioned on commentary but haven't seen a definitive list as yet.

Thought it must be near the top or the top...some come back..bit of the deja vu about it though.

I see The Verdict has been reduced to half an hour.

But hang on a minute. It's not The Verdict as we know it...

It is highest score for a captain on captaincy debut but TMS didn't tell me what he had to get past.

England captaincy debut hundreds are by; Lamb, Strauss, Pietersen, Cook and now Root. Cook had 173, which was the highest before Root. The only other centurion was Maclaren from an earlier era. Passed along from info provided by Cricinfo. You are welcome.

Edit: KP had 100 vs SA in Aug 2008 at the Oval

Nice? Nice??? I hate the adjective. Excellent from Stokes and Moeen, imperious from Root. Never mind dropped/missed catches and no-balls. Imperious, I say. The last four from Root through the covers off the back foot ...mmmm.

**** poor over rate. That may earn Elgar a ban. I agree with Boycks though. Start to award the batting team runs and it will mean, like the "Timed out" Law, it will be obeyed. There would be no need to enforce because sides would bowl their 90 overs in a day. 81 is simply not good enough. England have been one of the worst offenders in the past, so this is not a nationalistic thing.

Dawson had better get runs here, otherwise he will have to justify his place in the squad.

400? Pessimist. JR to get those himself if someone else can stay in. 350+ for 5. Would like to see Moeen get a biggie tomorrow. 583- 8 dec. put them in for the last hour before close.

Clem Hill. Early 20th century. Aussie 200+, but I'm no statto. Think Root should be thinking about batting once.

First hour with the new ball will be critical. If Root or Ali can stick around until lunch then it could be a very big score. South Africa could still bowl us out for 360 which would be below par.
