What would Mo have needed to do for a 10? Braided beard?

3 out of 10 for Duminy seems exceptionally generous, especially when Amla only merits a 2.

Cook 6.5/10

His knock in the second innings proved invaluable; we were looking at the game assuming no catastrophic batting collapses by England then SA and instead we got both.

Jennings 4/10

To his credit, got stuck in for the second innings + ground out some runs, but didn't score enough for a good score.

Ballance

4/10

Didn't look as at-sea as he has done. But people continually calling for his selection due to inflated Test average must admit this was hardly a resounding Test for keeping him in the team.

Root

8.5/10

Captaincy debut didn't get to him, 190 the "match-winning" batting innings

Stokes

5/10

Good 50 and good catching, fairly anonymous with the ball

Ali
9/10

Wickets and runs, you'd find it hard to dispute MoM here + well-deserved

Dawson

5/10

Pair belies his status as a bowling all-rounder, massively outperformed by Mo In the spin department despite supposedly being a better spinner. Valuable wicket of Amla boost him to 5 but again not convincing on a turning pitch and it wouldn't shock you if he's dropped.

Broad
6.5/10

A few wickets and some entertaining runs. His best is to come in this series.

Wood
4/10
I really really want Wood to be better because I think he's a great player and very entertaining to watch, but despite his decent knock in the second innings, one wicket in the middle of a collapse to show for a whole test match is not decent returns for a specialist bowler

Anderson
Got lucky with the strangle down the legside, assisted by Stokes for de Kock's wicket, but his six surely boosts him a point for entertainment value 5.5/10

SA

Elgar
4.5/10
Second highest score for SA in the match was not a complete capitulation with the bat, captaincy fairly listless it seemed

Kuhn
1/10
Who?

Amla
2.5/10

Disappointing game for the legend. His time will also come but it was no 250

Duminy
2/10

Out of his depth at four, could do nothing as a part-time spinner on a turning pitch... must be a deeply frustrating player for SA fans

Bavuma
5.5/10

Topscored for SA and showed fight in both innings but contributions didn't feel match-turning (and indeed were not)

De Bruyne
5
Gritty knock first up, caught in the collapse second up, embarrassing with the ball although shouldn't really have been bowling at all

QdK
5.5
Shimmered in the first innings, subsided in the second, still felt like SA's best last hope for the way he plays the game.

Philander
7/10
Standout player for SA. With ball, things could have been oh-so-different if they'd managed to capitalise on his early wickets. Very good with the bat + put some players up the order to shame. Gets points for being sidelined with hand injury (if he had bowled more second up, who knows...) but loses .5 for that awful drop

Rabada
6.5
Often threatening, never quite turned the match, decent nightwatchman knock

Maharaj
7
Lots of pressure on him to deliver on a turning wicket and more or less did

Morkel
6.5
Also consistently threatening although bowled too many loose balls in the first innings, wickets off no balls

In hindsight match was really lost in the first innings, but SA top/middle-order batting probably their weakest area. Bailed out in the first innings by QdK, Rabada, and Philander

Duminy 0/10.

Poor with the bat, unable to put any pressure on with the ball - in stark contrast to England's two part-time spinners.

Good stuff by black eyes.

I agree about wood. I think he has a lot of potential but I'm not sure if test cricket is the place to learn. Maybe keep him for odis. But since he has been picked they should give him another test.

It may be close, it may not, but I think suggestion it is hard to dispute is inaccurate, it's quite easy to - biggest score by over a hundred runs putting England in command from a difficult situation.

I won't bother making the case for Ali, it's clear enough

But who is man of the series so far?

Mo 1/10 coz we were whitewashed in our sub-continent tour of 1992/3 when we thought Graeme Hick could be our best spinner

If these were ratings for the last two years of test cricket rather than the last match you might have a point.

Is a fair comment. Lots of decent enough test bowlers have never got match figures that good though.

Yep and Dizzy once scored a double century and was probably worth a 10 in that game too.

Have said this before and always forget the exact figures but he averaged a fair bit over 200 with the bat that series and something like 12 with the ball and never even got in another test squad.

Edit: 231 and 11.25

Only worth a 9 for that series I am afraid.

250 and under 10 would have secured him the perfect score.

Was good enough for player of the series though.

And Trent Bridge to come. That's a different matter.

1. Cook 6/10. I hope he gets massive runs this summer. I think he will go on for many more runs.

2. Jennings 5/10. He looks the part. Would love to see him batting at 3 (with an in form Hameed) at 2.

3. Ballance 4/10. He's one of my favourites. Think he can do the job that Trott did for years. Didn't make a massive case for himself.

4. Root 8/10. Massive game for him and it's hard to mark him down but some of the field placings were a bit Cookesque. Should have got 300 first innings of course. Won by an innings and 200 runs.

5. Stokes 4/10. Apart from one good catch, thought he was rather feeble.

6. Bairstow 7/10. Thought he had a great game behind the sticks. Sadly batting with tail enders again.

7. Moeen 8/10. Thought he should have done better with the bat in his second innings. Superb bowling.

8. Dawson 1/10. He might be a nice lad but wtf is he doing in this team.

9.Wood 6/10. Just think his overall enthusiasm makes him worth a 6. Didn't get wickets but I would like to see him fit and firing in Perth.

10 & 11. 5/10. Anderson and Broad. This is not a knock at either of them but if you are going to be a top-gun seamer/swinger at Test level, you have to be able to zip it about. Paul Collingwood got it up around 82 mph. Neither of them are going to trouble top class batsmen at that pace.

LOL!

Anyone who gives Ballance and Stokes the same scores is deluded. I assume you didn't watch any of the Test?

Collingwood, 82mph? When? And Broad was up around 87mph at times too so I assume my point abut you not watching was probably accurate.

Wood gets more than Broad? How?
