And with that, the South African team surpass Australia's efforts on this ground in 2015 in terms of overs survived, but with a woeful strike rate by comparison :P

ETA: and suddenly it's raining.

Radical captaincy by Joe Root, abandoning the traditional obligatory "over-of-spin-before-lunch."

Good start from SA in testing conditions, and much needed given they're a batsman short in this game.

Another dreadful review. Root has a lot to learn on this review malarkey. That looked way over at real time let alone on the replay. Now they have 66.3 overs to hope the umpires don't c*ck up.

The two bowlers you would least expect to be objective about reviews .... Stokes and Broad. If the rub of the green went England's way at Lord's it's going South Africa's way here. There isn't much between these 2 sides.

Hmm...with de Villiers out of the picture, and in this particular game Rabada out of action, to my mind England are the more talented side, particularly in English conditions. But South Africa are a proud Test side and will be more resilient under the hugely impressive leadership of du Plessis.

No wickets lost after overstepping or dropped chances yet, nor were the two reviews turned down remotely unfair. Although there have been some nearish play and misses, nothing too unexpected on a day like this. SA have batted well so far in my humble opinion. However and typically, as I type a full Broad delivery gets Kuhn to drag on and at 66-2 back more in the balance.

Kuhn bowled and QdK promoted to four. With Amla looking good, this is the pair for SA.

De Kock promoted to no.4.

I wonder if that's a temporary promotion when batting first in the match and he'll drop down the order in the second innings?

Amla's certainly had two very lucky escapes hooking Broad. He hadn't control over either.

De Kock, to me, plays like Gower. There's a beautiful languidity to his shots.

Like Bairstow, I think you can bat QdK 4, 5, 6 or 7 depending on the situation.

Dawson yet to show with the ball that he deserves to be in the team.

5 maybe 6 of the South Africa team would get in to the England side. I think our weaker links are stronger than South Africa's and Root is the best batsmen. If South Africa's big guns fire they are a good side.

Neither of our change seamers showing they deserve to bowl in Tests so far this series. Stokes has been really disappointing all summer and Wood was found none of the movement that Broad and Anderson were gaining and hasn't looked anywhere near as dangerous (pace is not everything).

England leaking runs here horribly. SA have been going at a run a ball for ten overs.
