I always used to reckon once you got the 4th wicket down then expect anything between 50 and 150 runs normally from the remainder of the innings, so 100 if you want to take the middle.

But that was some years ago, cricket has changed a fair bit as have the pitches so you could probably add 50 to that and be looking at 100 to 200 runs which in your scenario would fit.

That said, after Morris and Philander in this innings what is there? Maharaj, Morkel and Olivier, although one thing hasn't changed much from many years ago is England's inability to bowl out tails when they need to and make numbers 9, 10 and even 11 look better than they are.

I'd love to know what split of all current cricketers have their HS against England. Of course sometimes England knock the tail over quickly, just you know when they want or need to........

For the first time in nearly 50 years I watched the highlights last night without knowing the score.

Swinging ball is helping to wrap up the tail, but will it do for our top order as well?

Superb bowling from Anderson this morning. If it remains overcast this is likely to be a very competitive score. I suspect Big Vern will be looking forward to having a bowl.

This is exactly what I was hoping might occur this morning. Jimmy now has four (scratch that - five) with some typical magic. As stated though, England's top order may be in for a torrid time against Morkel and co.

The ball is doing quite a bit.

Going to be a nervous time for our batsmen this morning.

I record and watch later to fast forward through the adverts and some of the between overs commentary, particularly Warne's, Gower's and Botham's.

That LBW DRS review insisted upon by Stokes just now was ridiculous. The vehemence with which he insisted he was correct gave Root no place to go. That it was missing and probably also hit the bat seemed obvious. Stokes really is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Be interesting to know what Bairstow's input was in that decision. I believe Strauss used to require a majority verdict from himself, bowler & keeper before asking for the review. I suspect this'll get sorted quite quickly.

Cook has been worked over utterly by Philander. Great bowling in helpful conditions for sure, but it looked too inevitable.

Edit: and Morkel comes around the wicket (he should do it from ball one v lefties and Jennings departs straight away. 3-2 and I'm nearly stuck in a 1999 timewarp at Joburg.

Send him back to Essex.

3-2 which is effectively 3-3 with Ballance there.

doesn't exactly fill you with confidence to have him striding in at any situation at the moment...

Jennings should get a cement company to sponsor his footwear.

Ballance reminding me of that old Andy Zaltzman routine about him... retreating back at such a rate that by 2019 he'll be out hit wicket first ball every innings, and by 2022 taking guard behind the stumps...
