England v South Africa 3rd Test July 27 - July 31

Well, thought I'd get started on this one. There is a lot to talk about and a lot to discuss in terms of England selection. SA are in a position where one of their best bowlers is coming back and a weak link in Oliver will probably be replaced. Plus, Amla, QDK and Faf look to be finding form.

BBC reporting that Westley will bat at number three. In at the deep end, Tom. Good luck and I hope you won't be too badly missed.

At least he has faced Morkel, Morris, Maharaj and Rabada at number 3 and got 106.

Plus 144 off Starc, Hazlewood, Siddle & Lyon. And a ton off SL last year.

Great news about Westley. All the best to him. I expect that'll be the only change, because the Oval pitch is liable to have more in it than the TB pitch for Wood and also for the spinners. But crucially, with an extra batsman actually in the squad, England will hopefully be able to pick two spinners without getting as heavily criticised for it as they were last week.

The squad has a bit of an England Lions look to it. Still, good luck to the new boys.

Stoneman's age against him - makes sense to build for the future - hence why Jennings keeps his place.

Dawson continues to baffle mind you.

Malan turns 30 in September and Westley is 28, so I'm not sure about age being a factor with Stoneman.

Expect Dawson to play and for Westley replacement of Ballance to be the only change to the team from the first two tests.

Well that would be daft. If its a turning pitch then Dawson, if a seamer then Wood.

We need the extra batting.

Agnew on Malan
He has had a decent first-class summer and England are looking at him to bat after Moeen Ali.

1 Cook
2 Jennings
3 Westley
4 Root
5 Bairstow
6 Stokes
7 Ali
8 Malan

Really?

Well maybe Ali is up to 5 ? Malan at 6 Bairstow and Stokes 7, 8..

Or Bayliss has lost the plot further than previously thought.

"KP" Rashid still out of the frame - not even in a 13.

If that is true, it is surely more than enough to prove that the England management team really do live on another planet.

Malan batting at 8 should result in Bayliss resigning.

Bringing in a batsman and putting him below 3 so called all rounders who have no sense for the state of the game and are not capable of diggin in.

Why is Root trying so hard to avoid number 3? What's wrong with him?

Isn't Stoneman about 31? If he comes in, does well, stays fit, by modern standards he could play another 4-5 years if not more. Hardly bad for the future. I'd rather him than Westley tbh.

That's too much batting. From the squad I'd go:

Cook
Jennings
Root (man up time lad)
Bairstow
Malan
Ali
Stokes
I guess Dawson
Broad
Jones
Anderson

Remarkable that Rashid cant even make the squad but Dawson and Wood can

Maybe Ali is to be promoted to bat at 5.

Verging on daft maybe, but that would be in line with how the England management thinks.

Changed his mind now....

@Aggerscricket
If Malan plays at the Oval, likely to bat 5 and Bairstow move to 7.
