At the very least we have a bit of a platform for Root and the middle order, which is a bit better.

Morris, albeit a wicket-taker, shows the other side of his bowling character with loose balls. Hundred up

Morkel looks likely to take the next wicket...

ETA: Beats Root 3-4 times in the same over ?!

At any moment. Hardly any 90 mph bowlers now.

Not Morkel, but Philander gets Root with a good delivery and an even better catch from de Kock. Malan bats at 5.

Philander bowling well considering he's spent half the day sat on the toilet. Seems to just come on, bowl a short spell, take a wicket, disappear.

Root dug up. Is this an ex Saffer with Welsh roots? Dawid Malan.

He is a bowler who quite often seems to have ridiculous figures like 2-3

Last 10 overs, 7 runs and 1 wicket. Excellent from SA's bowlers.

Agreed. They clearly are good enough to play test cricket - for England anyway - as there isn't anyone obviously better than them to play instead

Some very good bowling. But it looks like we've not solved our batting issues!

Maybe Bairstow back at 7 and Mo at 8 might be best placed to dig England out of this hole?

Oh Lordy. There was a touch of Chris Balderstone about that.

Looks like a slow grind to 250..unless the lower order come to the rescue once more.

Ah..the old Carlisle captain. Saw him play at Norwich when I first moved here and a few years later play cricket for England.

Malan gone now, to a very good yorker but that leaves the innings unravelling alarmingly with only Cook holding firm. England's recent batting woes would now seem to mitigate against them counter attacking to get out of trouble for fear of being called profligate. Good thing we bat down to 8.

That's a bit of an optimistic score. Seriously, this is a truly crap XI.

The man is a class apart, isn't he? Can't imagine too many batsmen in world cricket with the technique & wherewithal to keep out such high quality, hostile bowling in conditions like this.

Unfortunately for him and the even more brilliant Root, the supporting batsmen are pretty ordinary.
