@GeorgeDobell1
Sounds as if Wood is an injury doubt ahead of the Third Test. sore heel. A replacement will be named later today if he is ruled out.

@GeorgeDobell1
Finn to replace Wood in England squad. Toby Roland Jones will make debut.

Ball was the next in the queue. Finn goes ahead of him. So who would you play, a debutant or Finn with Test experience?

I would have to go with the bowler in better form based on results, which would be TRJ. Otherwise, Finn would have been in the squad in the first place, wouldn't he? Do England never learn re a bowler's fitness? If Wood had a heel issue preventing him from cranking up the pace at Trent Bridge, why did he play?

Of course, all of the minor flubs get magnified and maybe even distorted staring up from the bottom of a loss by 340 runs.

Dawson, unless they really expect spin to be a decisive advantage to exploit, which would seem to be a plausible avenue England could pursue, given SA's superiority with pace and seam. Broad and Anderson have been just a bit less than their best thus far in this series.

Why should either miss out? Surely TRJ is a straight replacement for Wood, although Finn would be a better like for like replacement. Wonder if he'll join the one test wonders club.

Thanks for this. Roland-Jones hasn't exactly been lighting it up this season either, has he?

What are the chances the Oval curators will emulate the ground staff at Lord's and go for spin-friendly?

One of them has to miss out or else we play 12. Paul Farbrace's interview last night suggested that they'd stick with Dawson. But he did say that if conditions dictated, they could play the extra batsman.

I've seen TRJ a few times live and I haven't been overly impressed. His stats have been good for a few years though, albeit this year, he hasn't set the world on fire. I'm pleased they've picked him ahead of Finn. Every time somebody has got injured in the last couple of years, we've turned to Finn and he has disappointed. He's been bang average for Middlesex this year. Time to give others a chance.

Forgot about Westley. Noises coming out of the England camp suggest they will stick with Dawson. Seems they don't want Moen coming in lower than 7 and they think the Oval pitch will take spin.

TRJ - dreadful player, dreadful selection, he will be hit out of the ground. Are the selectors shopping in specsavers?

Malan's FC bowling average is 39. Dawson's is 37. Is there more value in the extra runs that Malan may score over the extra overs Dawson might bowl? If Ali were to be the only spinner, you'd have Malan, Westley and Root to bowl on days 4 and 5 if it started to get dusty.

I think if Malan plays it would more sensibly be in place of TR-J. After all, the fourth seamer is really only in the team in case we bowl first and the ball moves around for so long that the main three get tired out before we want to bring on a spinner. Having said that, though, I actually think Malan has no chance of playing whatsoever, and is just in the squad so that the decision to play "two spinners" can be made to look like it was made on the basis of a last-minute pitch inspection (rather than on the basis of Andy Flower's love for Dawson), and thus will arouse less moral ire from the journos and commentators than it did at Trent Bridge.

Until 2 years ago I'd have agreed, he is a little quicker now and has far better control than in previous years.

Sadly that looks the likely side.

Unless the pitch turns from Day One, I'd try Malan instead of Dawson.

I suppose there is the argument that three debutants in a side is a lot to carry... but we were carrying players in the last match, as well

It's a real shame Hameed is so badly out of form as he looked like the answer to a lot of prayers briefly. But then, Jennings scored a hundred and that's probably all that's keeping him in the side

At what point will our selectors remember that our most successful period recently has come with 6 batsmen? The fact that Stokes can be one of those should make the decision even easier. Bairstow looks far more at home at 7 and then Mo at 8.

Life is made much easier for bowlers with runs on the board and it is ok for a Test to last 5 days too. I guess the main problem is finding 3 vaguely in form batsmen to go with Cook and Root.

Malan has had a golden arm this summer which has brought his bowling average right down. The number of overs he bowls probably gives a better indication of his overall ability as a bowler. He's a little different and good for 5 or 6 overs in the right conditions, but that's really as far as it goes. I think this year he's got 7 or 8 wickets for not a lot, but he's just had a bit of a lucky spell. Westley probably fits in to the same bracket. If they think spin will come in to the equation Dawson is the better bet, maybe leave out Wood/TRJ. I also tend to agree with Bayliss in terms of if 7 batsmen aren't good enough why bring in an 8th who you think is even worse than the 7 you already have, as all the top 7 consider themselves as front line bats. At the moment we have 3 batsmen averaging 30 or more and that just isn't good enough and its their job to do better. For me Malan isn't as good as Ali, so logically should bat below him. They can't do that, just because Malan is basically just a batsman, so its just going to end up with a better batsman being forced to bat even more in with the tail. On current form you could argue that Stokes should be lower down the order, but you'd back him to come good at some point in the next two tests.

The Independent thinks it's 3 debutants tomorrow....

Although captain Joe Root refused to be drawn on the issue, it is understood Malan, who impressed when making 78 on his T20 international debut against South Africa in Cardiff last month, is expected to replace spinner Liam Dawson.

It’s a move that would bolster a top seven that was badly exposed by South Africa’s seamers at Trent Bridge, where they were dismissed for 205 and 133 and failed to bat for 100 overs across both innings.

Malan would probably come into the team at No7. His presence, though, would ensure Moeen Ali drops down the order to eight and end the ridiculous claim from coach Trevor Bayliss that Dawson is England’s No1 spinner.

The rumblings are that they are going to go with Dawson so we'll see how it pans out.

Hoping TRJ can step up and very excited for Tom Westley. He and Cook will be batting together in no time so hopefully he can just pretend he's at Chelmsford and get a good start.

Losing Wood and Ballance to injury has been a blessing though.
