We jest but I wouldn't be surprised to see Shastri-Kohli use innings like this to justify dropping him at some later stage if he has the run of scores that Kohli is currently having (87 runs in his last seven innings).

After all the super gifted Rohit Sharma would have turned on his IPL slogging skills in this situation and scored 70 off 35 to help India win the match...

I think it's actually very rare for a team that's declined to enforce the follow-on to need quick runs. If there's a problem with the remaining time available in the match, you enforce the follow-on. When you don't enforce the follow-on, it's because you've got lots of time and you want to use it for resting your pace bowlers and wearing the pitch so that it aids your spinners more the second time around.

Anyway, we've got the rain now providing ample rest to all the players.

A hundred for Mukund would've posed an interesting selection question for the second Test. As it is, 81 probably isn't enough to keep out Rahul, which I think is just as well, because Rahul clearly has more long term potential. Mukund hasn't impressed me at all...even this innings was a bit patchy.

Mind you, Rahul will probably find a way to keep himself out! Been a terrible run of injuries & illnesses for him.

As for the game, I assume India will have a thrash for 10-20 overs and then declare. Rain apart, will be tough for Lanka to save this one (Zebras - even if I can't find a way to put a horrifically negative spin on this one!)

I am always glad when Jadeja gets more wickets than Ashwin.

Emphatic win for India in the end, though Lanka resembling the walking wounded with Herath & Gunaratne unable to bat, and let's not forget Chandimal is missing due to illness himself, which is a pretty tough loss for a team that is weaker than India anyway.

Until India tour away from Asia, its hard to say much about this side. They've clearly got all bases covered for Asian conditions. But the bowling looks inadequate for Eng/Aus/SA and apart from perhaps Rahane, none of the batsmen look like they can handle Starc/Philander/Roland-Jones etc.

Time will tell I guess.

Sri Lanka are really in a bad place at the moment.

Thought Dileep summed it up quite well.

What has happened to that lost generation?

Second test has started and it is more of the same, with India batting first and scoring quite quickly.

Surprised he didn't get a comment about Losing my Religion in there but apart from the ham fisted R.E.M. theme it's a good article.

Love Pujara's strike rate 29.11. Dhawan's was 94.59.

Pujara 4000 runs in his 50th Test
In his 84th inns same as Miandad, Dravid, Warner and Root.

In a series where most of our batsmen have been enhancing their overall records, our captain has struggled in the first innings of both the test matches. Yet another 600+ that SL would have to chase.

I read the SL management was unhappy that the pitch was not taking more turn. I wonder if that is something to be unhappy about.

May be they are watching a different match... this pitch looks like it's gonna be turning square from tomorrow. It's misbehaved plenty of times in the first two days already. This is a 250-300 pitch. That India are at 550 is totally Sri Lanka's fault.

So, India scores 600+ yet again, Ashwin gets 2 early wickets...I'd love to see some kind of a contest here; these one-sided matches are really terrible.

Pandya 108. Maybe now he can bat at 6. Think it should be Pandya, Saha, Ashwin. India's Ben Stokes with L plates on.
