West Indies in England

They have arrived and are playing Essex. Batting 102/2.

West Indies' Test squad
Jason Holder (capt), Kraigg Braithwaite (vice-capt), Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Kieran Powell, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach

Pity Jerome Taylor and Gayle are not in it. Chase to be the leading run scorer.

Winides are 5 down and all five wickets have been bowled thus far.

275-6 now. Blackwood has ruined everything by getting out LBW. Boo.

Essex top order destroyed! So much for a weak Windes bowling attack if this is the Top County side. (and only Cook and Westley are missing).

Bopara too from the batters.

Also missing Fostet, Harmer, Amir and Porter.

Bopara apart they aren't part of the top order who have been blown away for single figure scores. An impressive start by the Windies attack.

Only two of those wickets were regular top 6 bats. There's bit in the pitch and this morning was overcast so WI have done well; but as you'd expect a touring side to do against a depleted line up. But Browne's doing ok and I fully expect him to still be there in the morning..

Is the team playing against Essex likely to be the side for the 1st test? Looks pretty weak. Guys like Powell, Hope K and Blackwood have pretty modest FC records. Chase and R Chase have talent but they are very inexperienced and haven't sampled English conditions.

I wonder if Roach has regained his pace of old? He's had a decent domestic season but in his last tests was struggling to bowl over 80mph. From the bits I've seen, I liked the look of Cummins, while Gabriel, if fit, is going to be a threat due to his shear pace. Why he's classed as RFM I have no idea, he's usually up in the mid-90s in his first spell.

Their sampling of conditions yesterday suggested they might run into difficulties. On a pitch offering a bit to the bowlers, several came undone against what is virtually a second eleven attack. K.Brathwaite and R.Chase showed the patient, accumulating side of their games but there was generally a little too much keenness to go for shots.

That said, I seldom view warm up performances as an accurate guide to how sides might perform in the bigger games. With a 100 over limit on first innings, it may be that WI wanted as many batters as possible to get crease time, rather than any one or two to build a substantial personal score.

Pace certainly played a big part in the dismissals of Lawrence and Wheater. Not much bounce, though; the edge off Chopra was taken very low, while a couple of Roach deliveries went through to Dowrich at shin height. I fancy the end towards Hayes Close is a tad two-paced.

Cummins looked sharp and on the money but Holder didn't make Browne play anywhere nearly enough.

Essex's most confident bat of the morning appeared to be Callum Taylor. Ahh, the invincibility of youth.

Blimmin' funny weather this match (and for the past two weeks). Yesterday, I returned from Chelmsford in t-shirt, gasping and sweaty. Today, I wore two layers plus a raincoat and still felt chilly. I'll have a mild dry day and a Nick Browne ton tomorrow, please.

Eh?

Only 3 of the XI are in Essex's first choice side.

I've noticed that Shannon Gabriel hasn't featured in either of the Windies' warm up games. Is he injured?

England squad announced :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/40890954

Jennings and Dawson out, Finn if he was ever in is out too.

In come Stoneman and Crane

Alastair Cook (Essex)
Mark Stoneman (Surrey)
Tom Westley (Essex)
Joe Root (Yorkshire, capt)
Dawid Malan (Middlesex)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire, wk)
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Mason Crane (Hampshire)
James Anderson (Lancashire).

Was about to sort it into some kind of batting order, but BBC seem to have already when they normally do surname alphabetical. I trust the inclusion of Crane is maybe to rest Ali or play him as a batsman only, and not to go back to six bowlers which would be suicidal if done down under.

Malan extremely lucky to be retained, some easy runs for him maybe and a tour place?

England ought to win this one, not lost to West Indies at home in quite a few years and last lost a home Test back in 2000.....

Then again the England team that gets hyped up in lots of ways, including the "world class" all-rounders I think I read somewhere on the internet, is fully capable of rubbish results like losing in West Indies (series 08/09 and Test in 14/15 to draw) and Bangladesh (1-1), so no matter how good some think they are they can be brilliant one day and godawful the next.

Can't see windies being good enough, but England insist on handicapping themselves with things like six bowlers at a time when three batting slots in the top six are far from established and dependable - IF they even play enough batsmen.

They're not going to rest Ali, so if Crane plays it will be as a second spinner.

on assessment of the track.

They who cannot be dropped or "rested" will of course take 10 and 11, and rightly so.

They will go for Malan at 5 of course. I don't know why.

I see Derbyshire have also put out a joke team. The ECB should put pressure on counties to play a full string side against tourists.

Why? All other nations play weaker teams when we play domestic sides on tour. It means you go into the test series underprepared. Well done Derbyshire.

I can see JImmy and Broad being rested at some stage, so who comes in for them?

Plus, this is a real test (pun intended) for Stoneman. I've seen his batting in county cricket and he is more than solid, with a decent enough technique and I think he is at the perfect age to fit into the test side and play to his best. I hope he does well.

Still no idea why Crane is around.
