If he's not comfortable at 3, and his record there is worse than everywhere else except opening, I believe, then I wouldn't want to have our captain and best player having that frustration on his plate as well. Westley has started well and looks far more like a test player than Malan, and his game looks to be more suited to #3 than Root's.
100% in agreement with you. Root likes 4. He is best suited to 4. He gets runs at 4. He is captain and can pick and choose. He has looked at his best recently. He can bat. Billy gtb needs to blow it out of his ear.

Do you think Malan will get many chances beyond this test if he doesn't get a score and Ballance declares himself fit for Headingley?

Given the conditions I think it is. The pitch must have a load of water just below the surface. Not going to be spin friendly.

Because England need another batsman in the line up. And Root wants to bat at 4. Ali should prob bat higher than 8, I agree.

I don't know enough about Malan to form an opinion. I think Ballance is a better choice at 5. He is not a 3. Westley has laid a claim to the 3 spot.

So it's Rabada, Morkel, Philander and Morris against Broad, Anderson, TRJ and Stokes then!

I wonder how the game would play out if was just these 8 players! You wouldn't want big Vern behind the stumps

Sounds like Philander is struggling again. Faf suggesting that if he's not 100% they'll still play him as part of a 5 man attack. If he is, they'll drop Morris and pick a batsman- probably Markram.

Team that has batted first has won all three tests.

Without looking at the weather forecasts I'll predict a draw here.

Unsurprisingly given the location the forecast is dire. Wet and winter temperatures. At least we'll get some nice shots of the rain lashing across that monstrosity of a pavilion.

Makes sense take one of your few batsmen who's looked anything like comfortable - after a significant period of struggle prior to this series - and put him in an alien position.

Whether SA do change the batting or not the order does need to change with QKD moving back down to number 6. I get the theory behind moving him up but all they've done is just nullify a significant weapon, without really improving the issue he was moved up to resolve.

I'm going to go all controversial and say the side that wins the toss and bats first will win...

Dunno about that. If a team bats first and gets skittled very badly, they will be up against it. However the contrary argument is that the team who has batted first in each game this series has won very, very comfortably in each game and I'd hardly call it controversial to suggest that could again be the case here.

Apparently with the weather having been so bad the groundsman was struggling to get the pitch fit for play. he's even tried things like heat lamps to dry it. Should be a bowl first pitch.

Controversial in light of everyone calling it a draw before play has begun

When do they announce the teams? What is the weather like in Manchester? These are crucial issues. Glorious morning here around N.London way. Predictions? I think England will be unchanged. SA will make one change with Markram in for Kuhn and QdK back to 6 with Faf at 4 and Bavuma at 5. With SA needing a win to draw the series and England hardly known for their ability to eke out draws, I suggest a narrow win for England.

Narrow? Now that is a controversial prediction! Unless narrow is anything less that a 200 run defeat
